TYSON TATTOO LAWSUIT

Tattoo artist settles over design in 'Hangover II'

BURBANK, Calif. (AP) - The tattoo artist who sued over Ed Helms' tattoo in "The Hangover Part II" has settled his lawsuit over the design, which resembles the facial ink the artist created for Mike Tyson.

Warner Bros. spokesman Paul McGuire said Monday that the movie studio and S. Victor Whitmill amicably resolved their dispute. McGuire declined to discuss the case further.

In the movie, Helms' character, Stu, wakes up in a Bangkok bathtub with a facial tattoo.

Whitmill claimed the filmmakers ripped off the design that he tattooed on Tyson in 2003 in Las Vegas. Whitmill now lives in Missouri.

The lawsuit filed in federal court in St. Louis tried to block the film's release, but a judge ruled just two days before the film's May 26 debut that it could open as scheduled.

RENO UNION-EMBEZZLEMENT

Ex-Reno Teamsters official to prison for 2 years

RENO, Nev. (AP) - A former Teamsters Union official who admitted embezzling funds from Local 533 in Reno has been sentenced to two years in prison and ordered to pay $87,000 back to the union.

A federal judge in Reno also ordered 65-year-old Mark Winfield Tracy on Monday to pay a $10,000 fine and submit to three years of supervised release when he gets out of prison.

U.S. Attorney Dan Bogden says Tracy knowingly and fraudulently used union funds to pay for unauthorized personal expenses that he charged on a pair of union credit cards.

Formerly of Reno, Tracy now lives in Ocala, Fla. He pleaded guilty in December to a federal charge of embezzlement of labor union assets.

Prosecutors agreed Monday to let him self-report to prison by Sept. 30.

SPRING CREEK ARSENIC

Nevada utility plans $6M for arsenic water filters

SPRING CREEK, Nev. (AP) - A Nevada utility is committing $6 million to install filters to reduce arsenic levels in a Spring Creek community water supply.

Spring Creek Utilities official Wendy Barnett told the Spring Creek Association the utility expects to recover costs of installing coagulation filters at three Spring Creek well sites.

The Elko Daily Free Press reports that means the cost could fall to rate payers.

The remediation project aims to reduce arsenic levels measured at 44 parts per billion from 2005 to 2007 in the 200 tract water system in Spring Creek.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency allows levels of 10 parts per billion.

Barnett told the association on Thursday that Utah-based Sunrise Engineering and Elko-based Chilton Engineering could finish work by Dec. 31.

RENO DUI CHECKPOINT

Reno police publicize upcoming DUI checkpoint

RENO, Nev. (AP) - All the law enforcement agencies in the Reno-Sparks area are pooling their resources to conduct a DUI checkpoint Saturday night. And it's no secret because they're telling everybody where it will be on the city's south side.

Reno police Sgt. Dave Della says the checkpoint will run from 5 p.m. Saturday until 3 a.m. Sunday on Kietzke Lane between South McCarran Boulevard and Neil Road.

Della says they're publicizing the location because it receives more media attention that way. He says while the primary purpose of the roadblocks is to determine if drivers are under the influence, the stops also are intended to educate and raise awareness about the dangers of impaired driving.

The Nevada Highway Patrol, Washoe and Douglas sheriff's departments and Reno and Sparks police all are participating.

SPRING VALLEY COURT-REBID

Nevada board to rebid court road project

A board is postponing a northeast Nevada court road reconstruction project to allow for another round of bidding.

The Spring Creek Association board of directors unanimously voted to postpone the Spring Valley Court project after the lowest bid came in at $220,000.

A firm hired to plan the reconstruction design had estimated the cost would be about $135,000.

The Ello Daily Free Press reports the project is to run 770 feet from the intersection of Spring Valley Parkway.

Association directors said Thursday they think they'll get a better bid in February, when companies are gearing up for construction season.
