Evaluating Subliminals Decoded From"digital Healing" on Health

Evaluating Subliminals Decoded From"digital Healing" on Health

This mp3 is rated as: 16KHz, sublimninals are clear and well enginnered. The evaluation is based on the fact that our subconscious is feeded by ultrasonic vibrations i.e above 16KHz (roughly speaking!). Other vibrations below 16 are considered to be debatable and fall in our conscious to judge. Our subconscious responds to ultrasonic messages. Masking messages within music on the same wave level does not reach our subconscious. To your surprise, 98% of what are available on the market as subliminal audio/Cds/mp3s... have nothing to do with the real subliminal. So the evaluation claim an mp3 as: 1. contains subliminals above 16KHz or not 2- conatins masked subliminals 3-well engineered or not 4- contains no subliminals at all Feel free to send on your audio for evaluation. Pls mention the web extracted from. We will respond back soon. Subliminal Researcher is not affiliated with any Inc. and we treat all audios the same. 1,000 English Ants to Receive Radio Tags

About 1,000 northern hairy wood ants are expected to have tiny radio tags, about 0.04 inches (1 millimeter) long, attached to their bodies, allowing researchers to track their movements on a protected English estate. ?

The wood ants, which get their name from the "eyebrows" visible through a microscope, live in colonies housed within nests connected by trails worn into the ground by years of ant traffic. The biologist doing the work, Samuel Ellis of the University of York, intends to examine how the ants interact with one another.

The results are expected to help staff at the Longshaw Estate in Derbyshire manage the estate ? a natural and archaeological site ?with the ants' needs in mind.

"I think this is a world first. It has not been done in the wild before," said Ellis in a video produced by the U.K. National Trust, which manages the estate. [See Photos of the Tagged Wood Ants]

Ellis is not certain how long they will stay attached to the insects.

"The tags act like a bar code," he said in the video. "It gives each ant an individual identity and what this means is you can see which ants are going where and how individual ants interactions work together to make the colony long behaviors."

An estimated 50 million hairy wood ants, Formica lugubris, inhabit the estate. They are the largest species of ants native to the British Isles with workers reaching up to 0.4 inches (10 mm) long. To get food for their young, the ants gently stroke sap-sucking aphids, which then produce honeydew; in return, the ants protect these aphids.

The ants defend themselves from predators by spraying smelly, vinegar-like formic acid. Some birds, like Jays and Green Woodpeckers, use the formic acid spray as a cleansing agent to get rid of parasites, according to the University of York.

Large methane reservoirs beneath Antarctic ice sheet, study suggests

ScienceDaily (Aug. 29, 2012) ? The Antarctic Ice Sheet could be an overlooked but important source of methane, a potent greenhouse gas, according to a report in the August 30 issue of Nature by an international team of scientists.

The new study demonstrates that old organic matter in sedimentary basins located beneath the Antarctic Ice Sheet may have been converted to methane by micro-organisms living under oxygen-deprived conditions. The methane could be released to the atmosphere if the ice sheet shrinks and exposes these old sedimentary basins.

Coauthor Slawek Tulaczyk, a professor of Earth and planetary sciences at UC Santa Cruz, said the project got its start five years ago in discussions with first author Jemma Wadham at the University of Bristol School of Geographical Sciences, where Tulaczyk was on sabbatical.

"It is easy to forget that before 35 million years ago, when the current period of Antarctic glaciations started, this continent was teeming with life," Tulaczyk said. "Some of the organic material produced by this life became trapped in sediments, which then were cut off from the rest of the world when the ice sheet grew. Our modeling shows that over millions of years, microbes may have turned this old organic carbon into methane."

The science team estimated that 50 percent of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (1 million square kilometers) and 25 percent of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet (2.5 million square kilometers) overlies pre-glacial sedimentary basins containing about 21,000 billion metric tons of organic carbon.

"This is an immense amount of organic carbon, more than ten times the size of carbon stocks in northern permafrost regions," Wadham said. "Our laboratory experiments tell us that these sub-ice environments are also biologically active, meaning that this organic carbon is probably being metabolized to carbon dioxide and methane gas by microbes."

The researchers numerically simulated the accumulation of methane in Antarctic sedimentary basins using an established one-dimensional hydrate model. They found that sub-ice conditions favor the accumulation of methane hydrate (that is, methane trapped within a structure of water molecules, forming a solid similar to regular ice).

They also calculated that the potential amount of methane hydrate and free methane gas beneath the Antarctic Ice Sheet could be up to 4 billion metric tons, a similar order of magnitude to some estimates made for Arctic permafrost. The predicted shallow depth of these potential reserves also makes them more susceptible to climate forcing than other methane hydrate reserves on Earth.

Coauthor Sandra Arndt, a NERC fellow at the University of Bristol, who conducted the numerical modeling, said, "It's not surprising that you might expect to find significant amounts of methane hydrate trapped beneath the ice sheet. Just like in sub-seafloor sediments, it is cold and pressures are high, which are important conditions for methane hydrate formation."

If substantial methane hydrate and gas are present beneath the Antarctic Ice Sheet, methane release during episodes of ice-sheet collapse could act as a positive feedback on global climate change during past and future ice-sheet retreat.

"Our study highlights the need for continued scientific exploration of remote sub-ice environments in Antarctica, because they may have far greater impact on Earth's climate system than we have appreciated in the past," Tulaczyk said.

Numbers Surrounding SB 863' s Workers' Comp Reforms Still ...

The Legislative session is coming to a rapid close and legislators are being asked to hit a moving target in reforming the state's troubled workers' compensation system. Yesterday, the Workers' Compensation Insurance Rating WCIRB (WCIRB) said proposed reforms would actually increase system wide costs beginning in the second year.? It is now projecting annual savings that would likely grow once proposed fee schedules are actually implemented. What happened?

The WCIRB is managed and operated by the insurance industry, which pays dues to it as a ?non profit? organization. Through its member companies lobbyists it communicates with the legislature. Many legislators do not realize that it is not a government body.

The Assembly Insurance Company heard the WCIRB's updated projections at an informational hearing this morning -- the first since SB 863 was gutted and amended to incorporate the reform proposals. The bill is now authored by Sen. Kevin DeLeon (D-Los Angeles) and co-authored by Assemblyman Jose Solorio (D-Anaheim). No vote was taken and the committee scheduled none.

WCIRB actuary Dave Bellusci told the committee that the WCIRB analyzed three categories of changes: benefit changes, immediate reforms to the system and future reforms. He says that overall the benefit changes will increase costs by $860 million while reforms to the system to eliminate costs from duplicate payments for spinal hardware, eliminating many of the costs associated with liens and moving to a new medical dispute resolution process would save $1 billion.?

The lack of certainty over savings is unlikely to lower rates for employers? according to one insurance carrier representative. S/he told Workers' Comp Executive that there is not much in the bill to oppose but noted that in the grand scheme the WCIRB's projected $100 million in savings could just be a rounding error.

Of course, the proposed new system is untried, untested, and more importantly not yet legally challenged and resolved by the courts. Based upon history the court action could require five or more years to resolve and in the end could end up thrown out, modified or thrashed by the courts resulting in more costs not less savings and in the interim uncertainty. WCIRB projections do not contemplate any of that.

But as we learned during the administration of former California Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner the WCIRB is rarely, if ever,? correct in its projections about the $10 to $12 Billion per year workers? comp system.

"The cumulative impact of what we were able to evaluate, the overall cost impact would be to reduce costs in 2013 by $760 million the first year - almost $800 million," Bellusci says, noting that many of the benefit increases would be phased in. "By the second year, net savings would be $100 million per year - net annual savings."

WCIRB?s Projection Failures

But just one day earlier the WCIRB's estimates were that the reforms would increase costs beginning in year two by $300 million. Bellusci explained the $400 million difference was due to the elimination of a provision that called for PD benefits to be paid out at the temporary disability rate, which would have sped up the payout by a factor of four or five.

Bellusci also noted that there are numerous other provisions, such as a call for fee schedules for interpreters and the rapidly growing expense for home health services, that would have be calculated after the fee schedules are actually implemented. "Just calling for a fee schedule doesn't reduce costs," he noted.

Bickmore Risk Services' Mark Priven, actuary to the WCIRB representatives from business and labor, testified that his estimates are largely in line with the WCIRB's up to this point, but insists that the WCIRB is not accounting for other significant savings in the proposal in addition to the fee schedule changes. He points out that the WCIRB's estimate do not account for changes designed to limit the impact of the Valdez decision on medical provider networks as well as other reforms to the MPN rules. Priven's earlier estimate pegged the savings here at an estimated $285 million in the first year.

Others note that the WCIRB's cost projections fail to recognize savings that will come from reducing delays caused by treatment disputes. "Independent medical review will resolve the disputes in 30 days and prevents getting into the QME process that would delay resolution from 12 to 18 months during which time the injured worker is on temporary disability and the applicant attorney is developing the Almaraz/Guzman claim," one employer representative noted to Workers' Comp Executive before the hearing. "So you have to read the white space [in the WCIRB's report] on what's not being calculated."

Insurance carrier representatives observed the proceedings but did not testify before the committee, preferring to let the industry?s controlled organization, WCIRB, do the talking.

Inside the hearing, opponents to the measure -- lead by the California Applicants? Attorneys Association and the California Society of Industrial Medicine and Surgery -- latched onto the fluid nature of the cost estimates and the ongoing evolution of the bill's language at this late date as reason enough to stop the measure. But they also questioned assertions that all injured workers would gain from the proposal and maintain that injured workers who are permanently disabled and unable to return to work will be asked to sacrifice so that the majority can realize a benefit increase.

Applicant Attorney?s Say NO!

The opposition focuses largely on the elimination of consideration of future earnings losses from the computation of permanent disability benefits, but is also concerned with elimination of so called "add-ons" for sleep, sex and psychological disorders from the PD benefit equations for most claims. CAAA president Brad Chalk says the proposal also changes the definition of permanent disability to the definition allowed under the AMA Guides. "They've eviscerated 50 years of Supreme Court decisions on disability," he maintains.

Forces For

But supporters of the effort in the form of big labor's Angie Wei and big business' Sean McNally and Department of Industrial Relations director Christine Baker maintain that the time to act is now as there is rare agreement from the two major stakeholders in the workers' comp system -- labor and management. "The bill is good for workers and employers and is good for California. Frictional costs in the system are reduced and benefits are increased," Baker told the committee. "We're excited about this bill in terms of it being a wonderful opportunity for California and we hope that the stakeholders believe this something that will move forward."

Committee officials did not have a timeline for when or if a vote will be taken on the bill. The legislative session is over at the end of the month so time is short.

Spiritual Retreats on an Around the World Trip? | BootsnAll Travel ...

Even though a round the world trip is one of the most amazing life experiences you?ll have, it isn?t all fun, games, and relaxation. Taking time off requires that you plan ahead. From quitting your job, selling your house, your car, or other belongings, you will have to tie up loose ends before you even embark on your trip. The trip itself, too, necessitates that you think before you act; you?ll have to look into ticket prices, accommodation rates, health insurance, visas, and numerous other practical issues before you go.

Once you are actually on the road, the challenges continue. The extent to which you have to continue planning practical aspects such as flights will depend on how far you planned ahead initially. Similarly, depending on your financial situation, you?ll be faced with fewer or more economic preoccupations both before and during your trip. In fact, many long-term travelers work as they go along. Last but not least, chances are that if you are traveling on a budget, you will moreover have to deal with noisy hostels, dirty bathrooms, potential food poisoning threats, further health issues, and more.

Though the experience will be life-changing and amazing, contrary to popular belief, long-term travel is not one big, long vacation. All in all, it can take a toll on your body. A mental or spiritual retreat can provide a healthy break from these challenges, allowing you to rejuvenate. A retreat can even allow you to keep traveling longer as you get back on the road re-energized. In fact, the reflections you undergo during your retreat might even lead you to change your travel plans, making your RTW trip a more enriching experience as a whole.

Retreats: a brief history

Retreats have their origins in religion. ?If we call a retreat a series of days passed in solitude and consecrated to practices of asceticism, in particular to prayer and penance, it is as old as Christianity,? the Catholic Encyclopedia writes. ?Without referring to the customs of the Prophets of the Old Testament, the forty days which Jesus Christ passed in the desert after His baptism is an example which has found many imitators in all ages of the Church.? Similarly, Buddhism, which is said to have come about in northern India in the 5th century B.C.E, ?traces its origin to Siddhartha Gautama [who] attained an enlightened state of being that marked the end of attachments (and therefore suffering), and ultimately, upon his death, release from the cycle of rebirth (samsara),? according to the Patheos Library.

In the modern world, the reasons for which people go on retreats may vary. While some people continue to embark on retreats for religious and spiritual purposes, others seek more of an escape from the quotidian stresses of work and life back home. Further reasons may include the need for reflection and isolation, which is often difficult to achieve in one?s everyday routine. The opportunity to travel and experience a different destination may be a reason for going on a retreat in and of itself.

This increased interest in retreats is reflected in popular culture. Elizabeth Gilbert?s book Eat, Pray, Love, for example, recounts the story of a female protagonist enlightened in an Indian ashram. Stories like Gilbert?s are not only successful as books but are moreover turned into Hollywood films (in this case featuring Julia Roberts and Javier Bardem). But movie screens aren?t the only place in which retreats are popular. Yoga, for example, is gaining popularity among baseball players, as the Washington Times reports. In fact, yoga has even become important for kids with disabilities.

What kind of retreat is right for me?

When you start looking into a retreat, ask yourself the following questions:

  • Type of retreat. Do you want to go on a spiritual or mental retreat?
  • Day-to-day routine. What will your day-to-day routine be like? Are there activities, such as yoga or meditation involved?
  • Instructors. Will there be qualified instructors to help you reach enlightenment?
  • Facilities/Services. What kinds of facilities or services are provided? Think hot water, showers, laundry, electricity, accommodation, food, etc.
  • Degree of isolation. While some retreats will require that you isolate yourself completely, others are based on group interaction.
  • Duration. Some programs require that you stay a certain length, while others are flexible. Inquire about whether you can stay longer or drop out early.
  • Destination. Is destination important to you? Many yoga practitioners, for example, will prefer India over any other country. Rural destinations are also usually more popular due to the peace and quiet they offer.
  • Cost. There are retreats of all kinds, from free programs to the most luxurious ones.
  • Post-retreat. No need to decide just yet what you plan to do right after your retreat, but do come prepared. You wouldn?t want to end up without any money, stranded at an isolated facility with no way of getting back home.

Planning 101

Essentially, there are two ways to go about planning a retreat:

  1. Making a booking or reservation through an already established retreat
  2. Putting it together yourself.

As is the case with any kind of program abroad (be it study, volunteer, or work abroad), going through an organization has its advantages and disadvantages. Usually, going through an organization will incur higher costs, as you will have to pay the organization for their services. In return, however, you have a support network that can guide you to and around the destination, as well as take you through the retreat as a whole. If you decide to put a retreat together yourself, you will have to do a lot more planning.

Going with the flow

Especially if it is your first time going on a retreat, you might find it easier to go with an organized program. The structure that programs provide will ensure that you have people there to help you if you need them. Qualified instructors, too, can bring you closer to rejuvenation and enlightenment than if you tried to get there on your own. Some possible options include:

  • Vipassana, one of India?s oldest meditation techniques, prides itself as being a ?way of self-transformation through self-observation,? based ?on the deep interconnection between mind and body.? Vipassana courses are 10 days long and offered at no cost at centers worldwide. Be sure to reserve your spot in advance; spaces fill up fast.
  • Yoga. Sites such as Yogafinder.com or Yogaholidays.net will help you find yoga retreats worldwide. You can search by retreats and retreat centers.
  • Spiritual tours, meditation retreats, and pilgrimages are listed through the Association of Spiritual Retreats at spiritualretreats.com. For the Top 10 Meditation Retreats selected by Travel+Leisure, click here.
  • Religious retreats are also listed at findthedivine.com.

Doing it your way

By creating your very own spiritual retreat, you can adapt it specifically to your needs. Here are some ideas to get started:

  • Seek solitude. Find a destination that will allow you to be by yourself. Rural areas with pleasant natural surroundings are particularly calming.
  • Choose accommodation. Depending on your preferences and budget, the place you stay will vary. While some can afford a luxurious spa, others will prefer to camp alongside a river, waking up to the chirping of birds. In either case, look into whether the location will be safe.
  • Meditate on your own. If you have never meditated before, this might seem a bit difficult. In that case, Psychic Michele Knight recommends that you at least be mindful. ?As much as possible, try and be in one place at any one time,? she writes.
  • Bring soothing music. Meditative music or sounds can be helpful in centering your focus. Try Holosync, for example.
  • Stay offline. Checking emails multiple times per day is said to increase stress. Give yourself a break from the computer, smartphone, TV and other technological devices. Focus on yourself and your goals instead.
  • Drink and eat healthy. Vipassana retreats, for example, only allow you to have vegetarian foods. You don?t have to stick to fruits and vegetables, but giving your body a detox by eating more healthy foods can help you rejuvenate your energies.

Coping with the challenges

A retreat isn?t always as rosy as it sounds. At some ashrams, for example, you are not allowed to speak to anyone. Similarly, focusing on yourself can bring out problems that you otherwise hide. You might find yourself crying, desperate, and otherwise overwhelmed. Again, especially if this is your first retreat, you might consider going through an organized program so that you have qualified staff to fall back on.

Come back a better person

NASA satellites have been providing valuable data to forecasters at the National Hurricane Center watching the development and progression of powerful Tropical Storm Isaac as it heads for landfall.

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument on NASA's Aqua satellite captured this visible image of Tropical Storm Isaac on Aug. 27 at 3:00 p.m. EDT is it was moving northwest through the Gulf of Mexico. Isaac's large reach is seen by its eastern cloud cover over the entire state of Florida. At the same time, the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) instrument on Aqua captured infrared data on Isaac's clouds. Cloud top temperatures were colder than -63F (-52C) around the center of circulation and the western quadrant of the storm, and in a large band of thunderstorms east of the center of circulation, over Florida and parts of Cuba. That's where the strongest storms and heaviest rainfall was occurring.

On Aug. 28 at 8:40 a.m. EDT, a visible image of Tropical Storm Isaac taken from NOAA's GOES-13 satellite showed the huge extent of the storm, where the eastern-most clouds lie over the Carolinas and the western-most clouds are brushing east Texas. The image was created by the NASA GOES Project at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 205 miles (335 km) from the center of circulation, making the storm about 410 miles in diameter.

Warnings and watches in effect on Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2012 are many. A hurricane warning is in effect for east of Morgan City Louisiana to the Alabama-Florida Border, including Metropolitan New Orleans, Lake Pontchartrain, and Lake Maurepas. A hurricane watch is in effect for Intracoastal City to Morgan City, Louisiana. Tropical Storm Warnings are in effect from the Alabama-Florida border to the Aucilla River, and Morgan City to Cameron, Louisiana. A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect from east of High Island, Texas to just west of Cameron, Louisiana.

On Aug. 28 at 8 a.m. EDT, Tropical Storm Issac's maximum sustained winds were just under hurricane force, at 70 mph (110 kmh). The center of Tropical Storm Isaac was located near latitude 27.8 north and longitude 88.2 west, only about 105 miles (170 km) south-southeast of the mouth of the Mississippi River. Isaac is moving northwest at 7 mph (11 kmh) and is expected to continue in that direction for the next day or two, but it's speed is expected to fluctuate. The National Hurricane Center noted that the center of Isaac will be near or over the Louisiana coast tonight, Aug. 28, or early on Aug. 29.

Storm surge is a deadly part of any landfalling tropical cyclone. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) is warning that storm surge will be highest from Isaac from southeastern Louisiana to Mississippi, where surge levels are expected between 6 and 12 feet during times of high tide. Alabama's coast may experience surge between 4 and 8 feet, while south-central Louisiana and the Florida panhandle can expect between 3 and 6 feet. Florida's west coast including Apalachee Bay can expect a storm surge between 1 and 3 feet.

The NHC expects hurricane conditions in the northern Gulf Coast warning area during the afternoon of Aug. 28. As conditions worsen, isolated tornadoes are possible as with any landfalling tropical cyclone.

NASA's Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite has seen large rainfall rates within Tropical Storm Isaac, and those large rainfall rates and slow movement of the storm will lead to high rainfall totals. The National Hurricane Center expects 7 to 14 inches of rain with possible isolated maximum amounts of 20 inches in southeastern Louisiana, southern Mississippi, southern Alabama and the extreme western Florida Panhandle.

Gold Still A Sound Investment

PHOTOS.COM

Ahead of the annual monetary policy gabfest at Jackson Hole retreat in Wyoming, members of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve have been quietly hinting that another round of stimulus or ?quantitative easing? (inflationary money printing) may be on the horizon.

Speculation that the Fed will again act and questions about its continued near-zero interest rate policy and what long-term effects a new round of quantitative easing will have on the U.S. economy have created some volatility in markets. But one area where volatility has been remarkably low (not surprisingly given historical evidence) is precious metals.

Over the next 18 months, most analysts expect gold prices to fluctuate little between $1,750 and $1,800 with a high side of $2,000. As the European Union continues to falter and talk of the U.S. economic cliff becomes louder and more constant, precious metal prices can only improve. Silver should stick it out in the mid $30s per ounce range over the 18-month period, but economic uncertainty has the potential to push the lesser precious metal to unchartered highs, according to some market watchers.

While investing in physical gold and silver is a good idea in the eyes of most well-prepared investors, it is also a good time to reap benefits from investments in precious metal-mining operations.

Over the past four weeks, gold and silver shares have outperformed Standard & Poor?s 500 index with gold up by about 3.3 percent and silver 9.1 percent. Analysts expect further upward mobility.

Manipulating the microbiome could help manage weight

Monday, August 27, 2012

Vaccines and antibiotics may someday join caloric restriction or bariatric surgery as a way to regulate weight gain, according to a new study focused on the interactions between diet, the bacteria that live in the bowel, and the immune system.

Bacteria in the intestine play a crucial role in digestion. They provide enzymes necessary for the uptake of many nutrients, synthesize certain vitamins and boost absorption of energy from food. Fifty years ago, farmers learned that by tweaking the microbial mix in their livestock with low-dose oral antibiotics, they could accelerate weight gain. More recently, scientists found that mice raised in a germ-free environment, and thus lacking gut microbes, do not put on extra weight, even on a high-fat diet.

In a study, published Aug. 26 in the journal Nature Immunology, a research team based at the University of Chicago was able to unravel some of the mechanisms that regulate this weight gain. They focused on the relationship between the immune system, gut bacteria, digestion and obesity. They showed how weight gain requires not just caloric overload but also a delicate, adjustable ? and transmissible ? interplay between intestinal microbes and the immune response.

"Diet-induced obesity depends not just on calories ingested but also on the host's microbiome," said the study's senior author Yang-Xin Fu, MD, PhD, professor of pathology at the University of Chicago Medicine. For most people, he said, "host digestion is not completely efficient, but changes in the gut flora can raise or lower digestive efficiency."

So the old adage "you are what you eat" needs to be modified, Fu suggested, to include, "as processed by the microbial community of the distal gut and as regulated by the immune system."

To measure the effects of microbes and immunity, the researchers compared normal mice with mice that have a genetic defect that renders them unable to produce lymphotoxin, a molecule that helps to regulate interactions between the immune system and bacteria in the bowel. Mice lacking lymphotoxin, they found, do not gain extra weight, even after prolonged consumption of a high-fat diet.

On a standard diet, both groups of mice maintained a steady weight. But after nine weeks on a high-fat diet, the normal mice increased their weight by one-third, most of it fat. Mice lacking lymphotoxin ate just as much, but did not gain weight.

The high-fat diet triggered changes in gut microbes for both groups. The normal mice had a substantial increase in a class of bacteria (Erysopelotrichi) previously associated with obesity and related health problems. Mice that lacked lymphotoxin were unable to clear segmented filamentous bacteria, which has previously been found to induce certain immune responses in the gut.

The role of gut microbes was confirmed when the researchers transplanted bowel contents from the study mice to normal mice raised in a germ-free environment ? and thus lacking their own microbiome. Mice who received commensal bacteria from donors that made lymphotoxin gained weight rapidly. Those that got the bacteria from mice lacking lymphotoxin gained much less weight for about three weeks, until their own intact immune system began to normalize their bacterial mix.

When housed together, the mice performed their own microbial transplants. Mice are coprophagic; they eat each other's droppings. In this way, the authors note, mice housed together "colonize one another with their own microbial communities." After weeks together, even mice with the immune defect began to gain weight. They also were able to reduce the presence of segmented filamentous bacteria in their stool.

Moving from normal chow to the high-fat diet initiated a series of related changes, the authors found. First, it altered the balance of microbes in the digestive system. These changes in the microbiome altered the immune response, which then introduced further changes to the intestinal microbial community.

These changes "provide inertia for the obese state," the authors said, facilitating more efficient use of scarce food resources.

"Our results suggest that it may be possible to learn how to regulate these microbes in ways that could help prevent diseases associated with obesity," said Vaibhav Upadhyay, first author of the study and an MD/PhD student working in Fu's laboratory. "We now think we could inhibit the negative side effects of obesity by regulating the microbiota and perhaps manipulating the immune response."

Or, 20 years from now, "when there are 10 billion people living on earth and competing for food, we may want to tilt digestive efficiency in the other direction," Fu added.

The authors cautioned, however, that with more than 500 different strains of bacteria present in the gut, "the precise microbes that promote such weight gain and the specific host responses that foster their growth need to be better established."

Nigeria can tame insecurity, corruption, oil theft with ICT - Africasti.com

Dr. Charles Iheagwara, a licensed professional engineer and an internationally known technology researcher is the founder of Unatek, Inc. a US government Information Technology contractor located in Bethesda, Maryland and Intruiononline, Inc. a Cyber security online media and analyst service firm. In this virtual interview, the ICT expert who has a Master of Science (SM) degree in Management and Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), United States and completed several MBA courses from Harvard Business School in satisfaction of the MIT degree requirements tells ONCHE ODEH about Unatek as well as how Nigeria could deploy ICT and its applications to curb the ugly menace of corruption, fraud and insecurity.

How did you come up with the concept and processes that led to the eventual birth of Unatek?

Unatek,Inc. (www.unatek.com) was founded in June 1996 in the State of Maryland, USA. Originally, it was founded as UTV Environmental and Engineering Company. Later, we added another business line ? Information Technology ? and renamed it Unatek, Inc. UTV Environmental (www.unitedenvironmental.net) is now an operating business unit.
What problems areas is Unatek conceived to solve?
Unatek provides services in major information technology areas. Primarily, we are a US federal government contractor with multiple contract vehicles including the US Navy Seaport e, US GSA Schedule, State of Maryland CATS II, Metropolitan Southern California, Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission and Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority. Details are available at: http://unatek.com/contract_vehicles.php. In recent years, Unatek has carved a niche as a Cyber security firm. In 2011, Unatek won a State-wide award as the ?Homeland Security Company of the Year.? Details are available at: http://unatek.com/company_4.php
Unatek, MIT, Harvard and the many other heights that have become part of the definition of Charles Iheagwara were acquired along the line in your life. Can you please take us through your growing up days?
Growing up in Nigeria was fun and very fulfilling. In the schools, discipline was upper most in our minds and the school curriculum. We cherished culture and practiced our religion as best as we could. I grew up with the generation that valued knowledge, respected parents and elders and most importantly worship God to the true meaning of it. My parents have ten (10) children and one died during the civil war as an infant. I had my elementary school at Fatima primary school in Jos and went to the elite Mbaise boys secondary school in the east. The rest of my siblings had both their primary and secondary school education in Jos, except for my senior sister who attended Mbaise girls secondary school. Jos provided a good environment to be a boy and a young man. Those days, it was de-tribalised and we had fun with people of all ethnic groups and religions not knowing the differences. Since I left Nigeria, I have attended seven (7) undergraduate and post-graduate institutions (including MIT and Harvard) in Moscow, Russia, Wales, UK and the US.

Did any event in the past form your reason for decisions taken with regards to choice of course and institutions?

Not really, except that Mbaise Boys Secondary School (MSS) was one of the best at the time and we all aspired to go to good schools and to be lawyers, engineers, doctors, etc. In such a highly competitive environment, one can only but work harder and pray to God for success. But, I knew that I will attend the best institutions which turned out to be the case. At MSS, I had three (3) prefectship positions ? the Regulator in forms 3 and 4, the Furniture Prefect and Scaristian (i.e. religious prefect) in form 4. Nothing could have prepared me better for the life ahead. In particular, the Regulatorship was quite demanding as I was always the first to wake up and carrying the school all day and night, and being the last to go to bed. In the 2 years, I was the first to report back to school from vacation and the last to leave for vacation. Such was the training that became very invaluable.

How would you describe, comparatively, the ICT industry in Nigeria?

ICT is still very young in Nigeria. It has not been supported to the extent that society and businesses derive the maximum benefits from it. With a vast amount of human capital in the country, it should have been more advanced by now to the extent of generating revenue for the government and businesses. It is very conceivable to replicate Bangalore, Mumbai and Chennai here given the abundant human capital. ICT is labor intensive for the most part. Looking around, you can?t see data centers, software development centers or any meaningful Business Process Outsourcing. Nigeria should be making trillions and not billions from ICT exports if the infrastructure is developed. At the very minimum, you need excellent power supply that is uninterrupted at all times in designated development centers that will form the nucleus of any serious ICT development for export. The banks and government should extend credits to concerns that want to do business in this area on a global scale.

Is ICT being properly deployed in the country?

No. This is largely a private-sector driven sector backed by government-provided infrastructure and access to capital. None of this is in place now. For example, Unatek can come in to build 2 to 4 data centers and several other IT concerns that can drive development in this area. But, we must be sure of constant power provision and access to additional capital. Of course like every other IT company, we must have our backup power supply in place. But, backups are backups.

What is your personal impression of the American ICT industry?

It is great. It has growing beyond the imagination of the inventors, creators and developers. Productivity is at an all-time height. My Alma mater MIT has led world-wide development in this area. ICT has given the US and the world a new economy that has been extended to all parts of the globe given rise to globalization and the lift-off from poverty of many nations like India, China, the Philippines, etc. It is my hope that my native Nigeria will join the ranks of ICT exporters sooner than later.

Do you think it?s being deployed negatively or positively for most cases?

I don?t think there is any negative deployment except for private concerns that may be running IT-based pornographic businesses, etc. ICT, is an enabler of growth and a key driver for development. In this regard, more of it is better. The use for it is both personal and business. Either way, it is almost all the time helpful in different uses like Online business, social-media, business and government work tool, online education, secure online banking, transportation, bio-informatics, among others.
How ready is the world and Nigeria specifically for deployment of artificial intelligence?
Nigeria is not yet there and can?t claim to. With resource commitment, it is conceivable that artificial intelligence with the other ICT programs can be put to use in Nigeria for a variety of useful purposes.

Do you think this could help in taming insurgencies in countries like Nigeria, especially with the use of drones and micro-drones?

The developed world and some developing countries have been using it for quite a while now for a variety of purposes including tracking and fighting insurgencies. Drones for example that are used to destroy terrorist cells are ICT-operated.

How can countries like Nigeria use ICT to protect their natural resources like oil?

Bio-informatics can be used for that purpose. I am sure there are other ICT applications and knowledge domains that can be employed too.

What are Unatek?s strongest areas and where are you looking to improve?

Cyber security, infrastructure maintainance and software development. We are planning to enter the Nigerian market and build a couple of data centers, provide services to the banks, government and military Remember that we are a prime US government contractor with business awards.

What products have Unatek come out with and how are they fairing?

We have an online analyst service www.intrusiononline.net which is a subscription based service with a version being developed to be launched in a few months? time for public consumption. We also partnered with TransGlobal Business Systems to develop a CrimeProbe software that is widely used by law enforcements. We have done well here is the US providing services to 9 US government agencies and multiple State and local governments jurisdictions and commercial ventures.

How can Unatek help Nigeria and countries with similar corruption indices fight it?

We can certainly assist to fight online financial fraud ? help secure banking financial transactions and designing fraud prevention architecture for the government and others
Can Unatek provide the final solution to internet enhanced frauds (419 in Nigeria)?
Yes, because we are a leading Cyber security company. We have won to business awards in the US in the last 5 years (2007 and 2011). We have launched an online Cyber analyst product (www.intrusiononline.net) that assists governments and businesses to detect and fervent fraud. We are working with banks and the military as well.

Any platform for capacity building? And what special provisions for Nigerians?

A lot. I think with need data centers, business process outsourcing, development and Cyber security firms to mention but a few. Unatek is planning a ?Software Park? to be built in Nigeria in 2013. The good news is that the human capital is everywhere. But, we have to figure out how we can guarantee 24x7x365 power supply. If we are able to do that, companies, like Dell, IBM, Oracle, etc. will expand their operations in the country. But, we have to address the security issues first.

What lessons for Nigeria?s ICT?

Get serious and be part of the 21st century world. ICT has eliminated most of the barriers that prevented countries from developing in the 20th century and earlier. In the 21st century, the landscape has changed. Nigeria should learn from India, the Philippines, Northern Ireland, etc. Not doing so, we delay development and the potential to make money from IT. I envisage a situation where with seriousness, ICT export will be in contention as the major revenue stream with Oil export.

San Diego Personal Injury Lawyers Helping Those Struggling with ...

Most of us experienced yet another troubling earthquake in the San Diego County and in other portions of Southern California today. As a result, many of us have decided to check if we have earthquake coverage as part of our homeowners? insurance policies. Unfortunately, the majority of homeowners in the area do not have this type of coverage for damage that?s inflicted by an earthquake, leaving homeowners without much in the way of options if an earthquake does damage to our homes.

One of the reasons that people decide against this coverage even though it?s required by California law to be offered in addition to ?standard? coverage is because people are pessimistic about their chances of recovering a claim if an earthquake does damage to their homes and valid claims are filed. Below you will find a brief overview of the legal issues that surround bad faith insurance practices and how those who are dealing with this problem can obtain help from experienced San Diego personal injury lawyers.

Bad Faith Insurance Described

Insurance policies are essentially contracts that exist between an insurance underwriter and a homeowner in the case of homeowner policies. As such, the policyholder agrees to pay the premiums on the policy for coverage and the underwriter agrees to cover losses on valid claims that are filed by those policyholders. Unfortunately, this is not always what occurs.

When, for instance, someone loses a home or sees it damaged by an earthquake and files a claim for a recovery, insurance companies will engage in several common tactics to avoid having to pay those claims. These tactics include simply denying any claim that?s filed with no stated reason, purposely delaying the claim beyond a reasonable amount of time or engaging in fraudulent tactics in an effort to deny that claim.

When such a situation arises, people need to take action regarding these tactics so that the terms of the insurance policy contract can be enforced and the people who need this type of coverage can recover the compensation that they are due under both the terms of that policy and California law. This is easier said than done in many situations, however, as insurance companies are large corporations with access to resources that include defense attorneys and experts who will work to help that company avoid the financial liability tied to this issue.
