Workers of all ages see their jobs and employers in a similar light and want many of the same things, this according to a study of 1,000 people in 50?American states?conducted by researchers?in the School of Human Resource Management?in the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies?at York University. The findings will be presented at the American Psychological Association?s annual convention on Aug.?5.

?Many books and articles claim that younger and older workers see their jobs differently and want different things,? said York faculty member Paul Fairlie, a behavioural scientist, consultant?and the?study?s researcher. ?But some of that is based on opinion and hearsay. More rigorous research is needed.?

    Paul Fairlie?

The study found that age and generations had only a zero to three per cent?effect how people see their work and what they desire from the workplace. Positive working conditions were far more responsible for people?s satisfaction, commitment, and retention.?

Younger and older workers surveyed in the study reported similar working conditions, satisfaction, commitment, stay intentions, burnout, engagement and discretionary effort. All workers were motivated by similar work characteristics, with meaningful work topping the list.?

?A 10 per cent?increase in meaningful work was linked to seven per cent?higher satisfaction, commitment, stay intentions and lower burnout,? said Fairlie. ?It was almost?eight per cent?for higher engagement.??

Meaningful work was measured as self-actualizing work (work that enables an employee?to realize?their full potential, values and life goals), social impact (having a positive impact on people and things through?work), feelings of personal accomplishment and believing that their?highest career goals can be achieved within their current organization.?

The study recommends that employers provide the same positive working conditions to all employees, regardless of age, especially meaningful work, which may have the most widespread, pervasive and positive impacts. The study also suggests that meaningful work can often be provided through communication strategies rather than re-tooling the organization.?

The findings, which were statistically significant and replicated in two other studies, will be published later this year in an academic volume on aging, work and society.

    Computer scientists present smile database

ScienceDaily (July 30, 2012) ? What exactly happens to your face when you smile spontaneously, and how does that affect how old you look? Computer scientists from the University of Amsterdam's (UvA) Faculty of Science recorded the smiles of hundreds of visitors to the NEMO science centre in Amsterdam, thus creating the most comprehensive smile database ever. The results can be seen via the link below. The research was conducted as part of the project Science Live, sponsored by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NOW) and the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW).

481 test subjects participated in the research of Theo Gevers and Albert Ali Salah. The researchers made a video recording of a posed smile and a spontaneous smile for each participant. The subjects also were also asked to look angry, happy, sad, surprised and scared. Gevers and Salah analysed certain characteristics, such as how quickly the corners of the mouth turn upwards. This knowledge can be applied to computer software which guesses ages, recognise emotions and analyse human behaviour.

The researchers also asked the test subjects to look at images of other test subjects. They had to guess the age of those people and state how attractive they found them. They were also asked to judge character traits, such as whether the person is helpful by nature, or if that person is perhaps in love?

The data collected allowed the researchers to develop software that can estimate people's age. The software takes into account whether someone is happy, sad or angry, and adjusts its estimate accordingly. The software appears to be slightly better at estimating ages than humans. On average, humans' estimates are seven years off , while the computer is six years off on average .

The research of Gevers and Salah also shows that you look younger when you smile, but only if you are over forty. If you are under forty, you should look neutral if you want to come across younger.

Phillips Idowu 'making good progress' and ... - BBC World News

British triple jumper Phillips Idowu is reported to be making good progress in his battle against a hip injury and is expected to be fit to compete at London 2012. Phillips Idowu will be a major medal contender ? if fit (Picture: Getty Images) The 33-year-old?s build-up to the Games has been dogged by questions about his fitness after he pulled out of the London Grand Prix at extremely short notice and then failed to travel to a pre-Olympic team training camp in Portugal. That led to the British Olympic Association demanding to see his medical records, which the reigning Olympic silver medallist complied with last week, but only after having made it clear he was unhappy at the way things were being handled. ?Our medical team are in discussions with Phillips? team, including his physio,? said BOA chef de mission Andy Hunt. ?Phillips is making good progress and, right now, we expect Phillips to compete.? The team will have their fingers crossed he is fit to take part, as the loss of another high-profile medal contender, following Paula Radcliffe?s withdrawal from the marathon, would be a major setback.

Article > Novartis' Afinitor gets breast cancer green light in EU

After getting the thumbs-up in the USA last week, Novartis' Afinitor has now been approved in Europe as a treatment for advanced breast cancer.

The European Commission has approved Afinitor (everolimus) for use in combination with Pfizer's Aromasin (exemestane) to treat certain postmenopausal women with advanced hormone-receptor positive, HER2-negative breast cancer. Specifically, the combo is intended for use in women with recurrence or progression of their cancer after treatment with a non-steroidal aromatase inhibitor.

Herve Hoppenot, Novartis Oncology president, said the approval of Afinitor is "an important milestone marking the first major advance for women in the European Union with hormone receptor-positive advanced breast cancer since the introduction of aromatase inhibitors more than 15 years ago". The company quoted Jose Baselga of the Massachusetts General Hospital who said that "by boosting the effectiveness of endocrine therapy, Afinitor significantly extends the time women with hormone receptor-positive advanced breast cancer live without tumour progression".

He added that the drug, the first mTOR inhibitor to be approved for this disease, "has the potential to redefine the way this common form of advanced breast cancer is treated". Afinitor is already approved in Europe for advanced renal cell carcinoma and for progressive advanced neuroendocrine tumours of pancreatic origin; second-quarter sales rose 72% to $175 million.

California Gov. Jerry Brown plows ahead on massive projects

    Click photo to enlarge

Gov. Jerry Brown holds a press conference to discuss his first year in office at the Capitol December 27, 2011. (Autumn Cruz/Sacramento Bee)

SACRAMENTO -- Just what is Jerry Brown thinking?

At a time when 49 of the country's 50 governors would probably be playing it safe -- after all, he is trying to convince voters that it's in their interest to raise their own taxes -- Brown is boldly backing two mammoth public-works projects, calling his critics "fearful men" and "declinists," and using the S-word while the TV cameras are rolling. He's zagging when most governors would be zigging.

Think Gov. Pat Brown on steroids.

While Brown speaks often of his great-grandfather's pioneering spirit in risking his journey west in the 1850s, he increasingly seems to be channeling his late father, whose own legacy was built on huge infrastructure projects.

"Can we govern ourselves? Can we make decisions?" Brown asked Wednesday at a news conference unveiling a $23 billion project to build two tunnels underneath the Delta to transport water from Northern California to Southern California. "Can we make the investments needed to keep our economy and our culture and our society prospering?"

Longtime Capitol observers also say the governor is showing signs of the same impatience with the slow, creaky pace of government that led him to be on the constant lookout for higher office in his earlier gubernatorial stint, from 1973 to 1983. Only now, that impatience may have more to do with his sense that life is finite -- that at 74, he has only so much time to help turn around the

    state.

"This is his legacy moment," said Barbara O'Connor, director emeritus of Sacramento State's Institute for the Study of Politics and Media.

"It's true he wants to get things done before he goes," said O'Connor, who served in Brown's first administration. "When you're at the point when you have certain skills to get things done, you feel compelled.

"I think he thinks this is his shot, this is his platform. And he's setting the stage for a second term when the economy rebounds."

Indeed, Brown, as he dropped the S-Bomb to reporters Wednesday in reinforcing the notion that he just wanted to get "stuff done," alluded to his own mortality as he spoke poignantly about just returning from the funeral of one of his best friends.

Still, Brown is severely testing voters' ability to absorb the contradictions of his message as he simultaneously claims the state is in desperate need of new taxes but must embark on expensive and controversial water and high-speed rail projects.

"This will be a real test of the democratic process," Brown said Wednesday.

The governor's critics say he is biting off too much in an economy that remains stagnant -- and that he is heading down a perilous political path as he seeks voter approval of Proposition 30, which would hike taxes on the wealthy and boost the state sales tax by a quarter cent.

"Thinking big brings risk with it," said Hoover Institution fellow Bill Whalen, who was a top aide to former Gov. Pete Wilson. "It's great to embrace big ideas, but you have to have ideas that can be practically implemented. And he's basing much of his political capital on getting his tax initiative passed with a contradictory message."

The $54 million recently discovered hidden in a pair of special funds in the parks department won't make it any easier for Brown to make the case for new taxes. If legislators fail to assuage voters' anger over fat public pensions by reforming the state's retirement system after they return from summer recess Aug. 6, his task will be even more daunting.

"He's asking voters to do a lot -- to raise taxes on themselves and to believe in very expensive long-term projects," said Ethan Rarick, the director at UC Berkeley's Robert T. Matsui Center for Politics and Public Service. "It is in line with Jerry's history and his family history."

While Brown might be seeing this as his last chance to build on his father's legacy, the difference is that Brown's father governed at a time when voters had more faith in government, said Rarick, author of a biography of Pat Brown, who governed the Golden State from 1959 to 1966.

Brown has often been called the smartest politician in the state. When Democrats were anguishing over Brown being outspent by Meg Whitman, his billionaire Republican opponent, during the early stages of the 2010 general-election campaign, Brown counseled patience. He held off until Labor Day before he engaged with her and went on to a huge victory.

Still, Brown has had his own history of political blunders. With a referendum in 1982, voters overwhelmingly rejected his plan to finance a peripheral canal. And, in 1978, Brown learned the lesson of being on the wrong side of history when voters overwhelmingly approved Proposition 13, the landmark ballot measure that slashed property taxes. An ardent opponent before the election, Brown became a self-described "born-again tax-cutter" in implementing the initiative.

Now, Brown bridles at the notion of playing it safe as he approaches the fall elections.

"It's a very foolish game plan to always be trying to second-guess the electorate and hesitating to do what is needed," he said Wednesday.

Brown was defiant -- even toward some of his allies -- in rebuffing critics of the water project, saying the state's dire water situation and the environmental problems in the Delta had been studied to death, so he's refusing to get bogged down in "analysis paralysis."

Alluding to the still-listless economy, Brown said he won't join those who want to "climb in a hole and wait till it all blows over."

Syrian diplomat refuses to work for 'violent and oppressive' regime

Syria's top diplomat in London resigned on Monday in protest against the "violent and oppressive" acts of President Bashar al-Assad's regime, the Foreign Office said.

The move comes after a series of defections by senior Syrian officials in recent weeks, including diplomats in several countries and top army officers.

The Foreign Office said in a statement that charge d'affaires Khaled al-Ayoubi had informed it on Monday that he had "left his post", describing it as a blow to the Syrian government.

"Mr al-Ayoubi has told us that he is no longer willing to represent a regime that has committed such violent and oppressive acts against its own people, and is therefore unable to continue in his position," it said.

Britain expelled the previous Syrian charge d'affaires, Ghassan Dalla, and two other diplomats in May. Syria had earlier withdrawn its ambassador from London.

"Mr al-Ayoubi was the most senior Syrian diplomat serving in London. His departure is another blow to the Assad regime," the Foreign Office said.

"It illustrates the revulsion and despair the regime's actions are provoking amongst Syrians from all walks of life, inside the country and abroad."

It added: "We urge others around Bashar al-Assad to follow Mr al-Ayoubi's example; to disassociate themselves from the crimes being committed against the Syrian people and to support a peaceful and free future for Syria."

The Foreign Office said Ayoubi was not speaking to the media and asked for his privacy to be respected.

It said he joined the Syrian diplomatic service in 2001, and that his first posting was in Greece as consul from 2003 to 2008.

A Foreign Office spokesman would not confirm Ayoubi's current whereabouts or say whether he was now seeking asylum in Britain.

Defections are becoming a growing problem for Assad's regime, which has launched a bloody crackdown on a revolt in which more than 20,000 people have died since March 2011, according to activists.

Syria closed its embassy in Australia on Monday amid reports that some of its staff were seeking asylum.

Mayer Dabbagh, Syria's honorary consul in Sydney, confirmed the closure but declined to say why the embassy had shut or what had become of its staff.

Also on Monday a diplomatic source said that another brigadier general had defected from Syria's army to join the ranks of opposition fighters, pushing the total number of rebel generals based in Turkey to 28.

Senior Syrian officers have been crossing over into Turkey to link up with rebel forces on a near daily basis in recent months, often accompanied by rank-and-file troops, to join the ranks of the Free Syrian Army.

There have been a number of defections by diplomats too.

Sources said last week that Syria's charge d'affairs in Cyprus, Lamia Hariri, and her husband Abdel Latif al-Dabbagh, the ambassador to the United Arab Emirates, had both defected.

Nawaf Fares, Syria's ambassador to Iraq, left for Qatar earlier in July month after publicly renouncing his post.

Friend defends man held in Md. shooting plot as ?gentle giant?

WASHINGTON (AP) ? To his friends, Neil E. Prescott was a "gentle giant" ? a physically towering young man with a background in computers and electronics and a sarcastic, even biting, sense of humor that people close to him knew to shrug off as innocuous.

But police say they had no choice but to take it seriously when Prescott threatened to shoot up his workplace and referred to himself as "a joker," comments that raised particular alarm in the wake of last week's mass shooting at a Colorado theater during the latest Batman movie. The man accused in the Colorado shootings dyed his hair reddish-orange, and New York Police Commissioner Ray Kelly has said the man called himself the Joker ? a reference to Batman's nemesis.

Prescott was taken into custody early Friday at his apartment in Maryland, where officers found several thousand rounds of ammunition and a cache of about two dozen weapons including semi-automatic rifles and pistols. He was receiving an emergency psychiatric evaluation at a hospital and had not been charged as of Saturday afternoon.

Two friends told The Associated Press Saturday that they couldn't imagine that Prescott, who was in the process of being fired or already had lost his job, intended to be taken seriously when he allegedly told a supervisor: "I'm a joker and I'm gonna load my guns and blow everybody up."

"Neil's the kind of guy who had the ability to say the wrong thing at the wrong time and not mean anything by it. So to him, he thinks it's funny. He's kind of a joker," said Wesley Weber, who said his friend, at 6 feet 7 inches, was a "gentle giant" prone to bouts of exaggeration who "talked big but didn't walk the walk."

Prescott is "no stranger to sarcasm regardless of political correctness," and is fond of T-shirts with sarcastic, provocative or even inflammatory remarks, said another friend Mike Cochran. When first approached by officers, police say, Prescott was wearing a shirt that said "Guns don't kill people. I do."

"The Neil I know made those comments sarcastically in an environment where he felt he could make them without being taken seriously," Cochran said in an email.

Friends say that over the years, Prescott had been interested in hobbies such as computers, electronics and ham radios. His clique of friends would gather several years ago at nighttime parties to play multi-player video games and consume the highly caffeinated Jolt cola, Weber recalled. A sometime disc jockey, he'd also spin house music at Baltimore nightclubs and was the DJ for Cochran's bachelor party in 2005.

In recent years, though, he'd cultivated a passion for collecting firearms. He'd practice his shot at the training range, friends said, and communicate online with fellow gun enthusiasts about the ins and outs of firearm equipment and gun laws. At least some of the firearms recovered from his apartment in Crofton, near Annapolis, appear to have been acquired legally, authorities said.

A search for Neil Prescott on a website that tracks users' online activities led to a profile that appears to be him on mdshooters.com, a website for Maryland gun hobbyists. On it, he trades advice about firearms with technical know-houw and at times conveys concern about break-ins near his apartment and details interactions with the police.

Cochran, who also posts on the site, said he received one message from Prescott last November that said: "Might be sleeping in tomorrow, just had a suspicious male at my door. Notified PD but am gonna be lookin out tonight. Some crazy breakins near me recently."

In March, he provoked a spirited back-and-forth on the site when he complained that two police officers responding to a possible break-in at a nearby apartment "told me never to answer the door on my own property carrying." He said he called a sergeant to complain.

Last week, he was still on the site, talking with fellow users about 30-round magazines and boasting about his night-vision goggles.

"During the power outage i spent lots of time loading mags and mounting lights, when the zombie apocalypse comes i'll be ready," he wrote.

Maryland state court records for Prescott list only a speeding ticket in 2007.

Police say Prescott, an employee of a subcontractor for software and mailroom supplier Pitney Bowes, made the threats during two Monday morning phone conversations with a supervisor. The supervisor, who declined to comment Saturday to a reporter who showed up at his house, said the comments made him fear for his life and that he was aware of Prescott's weapons' cache.

Prescott at one point said he wished to see his supervisor's "brain splatter all over the sidewalk," but also acknowledged that he shouldn't be saying such things over the phone, according to an application in support of a search warrant. The threats were then reported to the police, who paid an initial visit to Prescott's apartment on Thursday before taking him into custody Friday morning.

Cochran said he's known Prescott since 2001, when they were colleagues at a technical support outsourcing company. He said Prescott was a network engineer.

"With his skill set and education he would have had no problems finding other work with good pay. Neil did not at any point indicate to me that he had problems with where he was working," Cochran wrote.

Pitney Bowes spokeswoman Carol Wallace said Prescott had not been on any company property in at least four months. It wasn't clear why he was losing his job.

Weber said that while he didn't know the exact context of the threat, he thought it was the kind of comment that is taken more seriously now than it may have been years ago, especially one week after the Colorado shooting.

"We live in a different world now," he said.

    PSYCHED AMERICAN

U.S. freestyle wrestler Jake Herbert is the team's resident jokester and could barely keep a straight face during a press conference on Saturday. But when asked how he flips the switch just before a match, he gave great insight into the mental approach of athletes competing in one of the world's roughest sports.

"You start to look at that guy across the mat and you start to think of what he's trying to take away from you (and think) 'He didn't work as hard as me. I know for a fact he wasn't up at 6 a.m., he wasn't hitting the bike until he puked. He wasn't hitting the weights as hard as me. He wasn't as dedicated as I am. He doesn't want it as much as I do.' And it starts that excitement. It starts getting my blood pressure going. It starts getting the hairs standing on the back of my neck."

Upon hearing Herbert's rant, teammate Sam Hazewinkel responded "I ready to go, man. Whew!"

Herbert and Hazewinkel will have to calm down though. The freestyle wrestling competition doesn't start until Aug. 10.

    SHE MAKES A DIFFERENCE

There is nothing more important than the Olympics, right? How about a wedding?

Croatian women's basketball player Marija Vrsaljko skipped last week's exhibition game against the United States to get married.

The Americans pounded Croatia by 54 points in the game.

Having the lanky center back in the lineup is making a difference in the opener. She has eight points early in the third quarter and Croatia trails by just four points.

    HOW MUCH?!

Day One in the Olympic Park and already visitors are feeling it in their wallets.

"Twenty-five pounds for a T-shirt!" exclaimed Catherine Goley of Birmingham, who was browsing through a London 2012 souvenir shop ? and made a hasty exit after finding nothing in her price range.

She had tickets for Saturday night's swim competition, but others without tickets came to the park just to check it out, paying 10 pounds ($15) to get in and another 15 pounds ($22) to go up the Orbit observation deck.

Colleen Whalen, of Cincinnati, Ohio, said she would have paid to go up since that's the only way to see inside the main stadium and the Olympic flame, but tickets were sold out.

Whalen, who won a ticket to the swim finals, said she briefly considered buying a ticket for the opening ceremony, but balked at the price for the remaining seats.

"The only tickets left were 1800 or 2300 pounds and yes, that's definitely out of my price range." (In dollars, that's a cool $2,800 to $3,570).

    PRIORITIES

Brazilian rower Kissya da Costa has put her modeling career on hold to pursue her dream of Olympic gold at the London Games.

The 30-year-old, who advanced to the quarterfinals of the women's single sculls on Saturday with a fourth-place finish in her heat, says she hasn't posed in front of the cameras for two years because of the demands of her sport.

"I don't miss modeling," she told The Associated Press. "In Brazil, it doesn't earn you much money."

She now divides her time between rowing and studying nutrition at university, where she still has two years left in her degree.

    US FEEL

From the Ludacris and Ice Cube blaring on the speakers to the cheerleaders and hype man who fills the breaks in the action, the presentation of basketball in London has a decidedly American feel.

An in-arena announcer tries to pump up the crowd, similar to many NBA arenas.

"Who here is supporting Croooo-aaaaatia?!?" he hollers.

    "And who is supporting Americaaaaaa?!?"

The White Stripes, Queen and the Rolling Stones are also heard to appeal to the rock and roll set.

And for the basketball novices in the crowd, the announcer explains things like flagrant fouls and what happens when a team is in foul trouble.

    SWEDISH STEEL

The bar used in the Olympic weightlifting competition is made of Swedish steel built to withstand 1.5 tons without snapping or losing its shape. That's four times more weight than the strongest competitors can lift.

The elasticity of the bar allows it to bend back into shape after each lift, says Erik Blomberg, CEO of Eleiko, the supplier of the weightlifting equipment used in London.

The plates consist of a steel hub coated with rubber. The firmness of the rubber is key, once the lifter lets go of the bar. "Not too soft so that it bounces out of control. And not too hard so that it damages the platform," says Bloomberg.

    SYRIA'S BALANCING ACT

He's in a delicate position for sure.

The head of Syria's Olympic team at the London Games is choosing his words carefully to describe the ambitions of the country's athletes and the government, whose forces are bombarding his home city of Aleppo.

Maher Khayata said he was worried about his family, trapped in Aleppo during one of the most significant battles of the 17-month uprising in Syria. But he said the army is trying to "protect people and keep them safe."

Three Syrian athletes were competing on the first full day of competition in swimming, shooting and boxing Saturday. Back home, the army pounded Aleppo by helicopters to flush out rebels.

"There are two sides of the dispute," Khayata said. "One of them is fighting to seek power and the other side wants to keep the security of the country."

"I am a sportsman, not a politician. Everyone knows there are armed people and the army that is trying to protect people and keep them safe."

    SLAPSTICK MISHAP

And now for something completely different.

It was bound to happen in the land of Monty Python and Mr. Bean: We've just had our first slapstick comedy-related mishap of the London Games.

The beach volleyball venue at Horse Guards Parade has been playing the "Benny Hill" theme over the loudspeaker while the raking crew smooths out the sand during timeouts. That inspired a couple of fans to mimic the show ? in short, to start running around the concourse between the upper and lower sections, chasing and being chased by a pair of blondes in skirts.

The crowd loved it, and the P.A. announcer also egged them on, until one of the blokes ran smack-dab into an Olympic volunteer.

    The crowd gasped.

The two quickly hugged it off and went back to their respective duties: She resumed directing fans to their seats and he headed for the beer concession.

The volunteer, who declined to give her name, said she was uninjured. The fan, who said to identify him and his mate as "The Murray Brothers," seemed more concerned about spilling some of his beer.

The Associated Press has learned exclusively that it was not his first of the day.

So, no crisis here. Until a giant cartoon foot comes out of the sky and stomps out the venue, that is.

    QUEEN'S STUNTMAN

Gary Connery has completed more than 880 sky dives in his career as a stuntman ? but never dressed as a woman.

He donned a dress and silver wig as Queen Elizabeth II, while his colleague Mark Sutton doubled for James Bond actor Daniel Craig, as the pair leaped Friday night from a helicopter above Olympic Park as part of the big surprise in the four-hour opening ceremony.

"Love the dress, will see if I can keep it," Connery tweeted after landing on a narrow bridge beside the stadium, a stunt he and Sutton had been training for months to do.

Connery's no slouch as a stuntman. Earlier this year he jumped 2,400 feet (730 meters) from a helicopter and landed ? without using any parachute at all. Instead he used a carpet of 18,600 cardboard boxes to break his fall.

The excitement near the road course finish line outside the palace fell flat as Great Britain and favorite Mark Cavendish failed to win a medal.

"I was there when he didn't win it!" shouted Richard Jones of London.

He'd been watching the race on television with his wife and another couple when they decided with an hour to go to hustle over to Buckingham Palace for the finish.

"We practically did a triathlon to get here," said Jane Carson of Chester. "And we didn't even get very close ? but neither did Cav."

    STAG DO

A rowing regatta isn't the usual place to start a bachelor party.

It worked out just fine for husband-to-be Martin Stanning, though, as he watched sister Heather romp to victory in the women's pair with partner Helen Glover at Dorney Lake? setting a Olympic best time in the process.

Martin was under orders in the "stag do" ? as it's called in Britain ? from his older brother Alistair, who was organizer-in-chief. His parents were there, too.

Glover and Stanning are big favorites to win the final of the women's pair on Wednesday after going through this season unbeaten. If they win gold, they'll become the first British women to do so.

CNN chief Jim Walton calls it quits

NEW YORK (AP) ? CNN chief Jim Walton said Friday he is quitting, saying the company needs new leadership at a time its flagship U.S. network is suffering through some of its poorest ratings ever.

Walton built the company into a profitable international news organization in his 10 years as president of CNN Worldwide, and said it is on track for record profits this year. But the U.S. network is the most visible part of the business and is now entrenched in third place behind rivals Fox News Channel and MSNBC in prime time.

He announced the decision in an email to staff members on Friday. He said he'll continue working until the end of the year during the company's search for a successor.

Walton said he's been talking to his boss, Turner Broadcasting Chairman Phil Kent, about leaving since the first few months of the year. CNN is owned by Time Warner.

"There's always pressure," he said. "I've been doing this a long time and CNN has had its ups and downs, like all companies have had ups and downs. I feel really strongly about a number of parts of this company. We're having a really strong year internationally and in mobile. It's clear there's a lot of spotlight on CNN's U.S. performance and it's reasonable that there is that spotlight."

CNN's U.S. network had its worst-ever ratings for a second quarter, down 40 percent for some of its prime-time shows. The decline was particularly notable in May, when CNN faced tough competition from broadcast networks during a slow news period and its ratings were compared to a year earlier, in the aftermath of the Osama bin Laden killing.

It hasn't improved appreciably since then, with veteran newsman Wolf Blitzer often losing in the ratings to broadcast novice Al Sharpton on MSNBC. Piers Morgan's show has been a bright spot this month.

The network was also embarrassed by initially reporting incorrectly the U.S. Supreme Court's decision on President Obama's health care law, then taking longer to correct itself than Fox, which made a similar error.

CNN's ratings traditionally fluctuate based on the intensity of the news. Fox and MSNBC have insulated themselves from that problem somewhat through its partisan prime-time hosts. Walton has resisted this approach, believing CNN's strength lies in being a nonpartisan news source and the company's reputation would be damaged worldwide if the U.S. network changed.

Walton said he doesn't expect that to change after he leaves.

"We kind of know who we are and our corporate colleagues know who we are and there has always been great support internally that we're going to be a news organization," he said.

At CNN, "we want to be accurate above all else, we want to be timely ? first if possible ? we want to actually go to where the news is, not just subscribe to some agency's news feed and talk about it. We want to report the news from multiple sides, all sides, and without bias."

Walton, 54, began working at CNN in 1981 shortly after it started. His first job involved ripping paper scripts off wire machines and operating the TelePrompter for news anchors.

CNN has suffered from weak programming and fundamental changes in the way people get their information, said Frank Sesno, a former CNN Washington bureau chief and now a professor at George Washington University. The company needs to make programming compelling enough to draw viewers used to getting their news elsewhere first online, he said.

CNN should put its attention toward other ways of delivering the news, said analyst Brad Adgate of Horizon Media.

"I don't know what they can do to catch up with television," he said.

Jeff Bewkes, Time Warner chairman and CEO, said Walton took over an underperforming company in 2003 and tripled earnings, delivering an annual growth of 15 percent. Roughly half of the company's earnings come through subscription fees from cable and satellite companies, and they have been growing steadily worldwide.

"Jim has been instrumental in growing the business into the financial powerhouse it has become, while establishing the brand as the worldwide leader for television news," Bewkes said. "I respect him personally and professionally and support the decision he and Phil Kent have reached."

Kent said Walton has a track record of great judgment when it matters most. He "challenged the organization to think bigger, reach further, do better," he said.

"I think this company needs some new thinking," Walton said. "I've been doing this job I'm in now for 10 years and I'm ready for a change."

Prostate Cancer Patients More Likely To Die From Other Conditions ...

Connie K. Ho for redOrbit.com ? Your Universe Online

A new study from the Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) found that men who are diagnosed with prostate cancer have a greater chance to die due to preventable conditions like heart disease, rather than from the cancer itself.

The study, the largest done to date, examines the causes of death related to men who have prostate cancer. The researchers believe that the findings show the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle, which can affect the management of prostate cancer. The results of the project were recently published in the Advance Access online Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

?Our results are relevant for several million men living with prostate cancer in the United States,? said first author Mara Epstein, a postdoctoral researcher at HSPH, in a prepared statement. ?We hope this study will encourage physicians to use a prostate cancer diagnosis as a teachable moment to encourage a healthier lifestyle, which could improve the overall health of men with prostate cancer, increasing both the duration and quality of their life.?

According to the researchers, prostate cancer is the cancer most frequently diagnosed. It affects one in six men and the rate of diagnosis has increased among countries like the United States, Sweden, and other Western countries. On the other hand, the number of men who die from the disease has declined and scientists believe that this is due to the use of the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test that has helped diagnose the disease in scores of men.

In the study, the investigators studied data from the U.S. Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program, which included more than 490,000 male participants from 1973 to 2008. They also looked at the nationwide Swedish Cancer and Cause of Death registries that took place between 1961 to 2008 and included more than 210,000 male participants.

The results from the project demonstrate that, during the study period, prostate cancer made up 52 percent of all deaths reported in Sweden and 30 percent of all deaths reported in the United States among men who had prostate cancer. On the other hand, only 35 percent of Swedish men and 16 percent of men from the U.S. who were diagnosed with prostate cancer died from the disease. In both groups, the likelihood of having a death related to prostate cancer declined, as opposed to the chance of death related to heart disease and non-prostate cancer which stayed constant.

Over the five-year period, deaths from prostate cancer were 29 percent in Sweden and 11 percent in the United States. The death rate related to prostate cancer can be different depending on age and calendar year of diagnosis. The most deaths associated to the disease were when men are diagnosed at an older age and when they were diagnosed during the earlier years of screenings. The researchers believe that the study?s findings will be useful in better understanding patient survival.

?Our study shows that lifestyle changes such as losing weight, increasing physical activity, and quitting smoking, may indeed have a greater impact on patients? survival than the treatment they receive for their prostate cancer,? said senior author Hans-Olov Adami, professor of epidemiology at HSPH, in the statement.

    A Baby Shower for Harper!

Perhaps you recall a few months back when I posted the DIY tutorial for these cute pennant baby shower invites. Well, there actually was a baby shower to follow! I just haven?t gotten around to posting it (that is until now) because I wanted to make sure that it truly gets the attention it deserves as it was for a very special baby girl named Harper and her mama, Maaike. When we all heard Maaike was expecting her first baby, everyone wanted to throw her a baby shower as she is both a master entertainer and one of the most kind and generous people you?ll ever meet. While a group of us were in the throes of baby shower planning, baby Harper had a different plan and decided to arrive a bit early than anticipated! Needless to say, Maaike, her hubby Erik, baby Harper, and their entire families had many long and exhausting days ahead of them, but they made it (!!!!) and just before they came home, we were so thrilled to be able to throw this baby shower for them!

Maaike did not want frilly and pink. Her style is mason jars, beautiful flowers, and rustic elements, and we knew Harper?s nursery colors were yellow and red so we decided to go with a pennant theme. I found a book of scrapbook paper in fun patterns and the right colors and used it to make the invites along with this pennant bunting in which I simply used twine to connect each pennant.

Because there were so many people who wanted to celebrate Harper?s arrival, we decided to stick to cocktails, appetizers, and desserts for the late afternoon gathering.

Squat mason jars are perfect dip bowls, especially if you?re on the go.

Remember the wine barrel Lazy Suzan our friend Kim picked up when Maaike introduced us to Newburyport? It was perfect as a cheese platter and the centerpiece of the coffee table.

The vintage soda crates I picked up on my first trip to Brimfield were the perfect way to tote the mason jars we used to serve the lemonade.

I made a pennant bunting for the cake which the bakery made to coordinate with the invites and flags for the cupcakes.

    Time to cut the cake!

In addition to the red and yellow theme, we also wanted to make sure that we pulled in some elements from Maaike?s Dutch heritage as it?s very important to her. Tulips, her favorite flowers, were an obvious choice. As baby showers are mostly an American tradition, there aren?t really any Dutch baby shower traditions, however, there is a tradition of serving a special type of cookie called a beschuit met muisjes. With the help of Maaike?s mother, we were able to get our hands on some.

Another Dutch tradition is to write your wishes for a bride and groom and attach them to a tree branch at their wedding. While this wasn?t a wedding, we thought this would still be a fun thing to do by using paper flowers from Paper Source and writing our wishes for baby Harper.

Then it was spoil Maaike and Harper time!

Amy picked up a onesie from one of Maaike?s favorite shops in Key West, Besame Mucho.

Maaike?s niece offers a basket of favorite items that have been passed down through generations of their family?so sweet!

And our friend Jenny brought this beautiful ?Welcome Baby? lilac flower arrangement.

And lastly, we lined the front porch with potted daisies wrapped in tissue and raffia to send home with our guests.

WELCOME TO THE WORLD BABY HARPER!

You are one lucky little girl to have the most wonderful parents, and we all can?t wait to watch you continue to grow into the amazing person we know you?re destined to be!

Now Might Just Be The Time To Buy Your Family Waterfront Home On

Now might just be the time to buy your waterfront home on Grand Lake. We continue to see article after article showing home sales being greater than a year ago, new construction numbers up, and prices of homes being steady to higher. It sure likes like a bottom in real estate pricing to me. If you have been thinking about a waterfront retirement home or a family retreat waterfront home now might be the time to get a deal. Late summer when it is hot and the season is about 2/3 over is a great time to get a current waterfront home owner to just give someone a deal thinking their won?t sell until the next spring. You know what though, there is still 1/3 of the boating season left and your retreat on Grand Lake is a wonderful place to spend winter weekends just unwinding from life?s pressures. Enjoy a good book, a movie, dine out in wonderful places around the lake, and shop in the quaint shops. A lake retreat is fun year round. The last good point, interest rates are rock bottom low. They may stay this low another year, but someone soon they will go up as much as 3-4% pretty fast. Just think low bottom home price, record low interest rate, and chance to make memories with family and friends and have a good investment to boot. Sure seems like the time to me to think buying a waterfront home on Grand Lake. In might be getting to within months of when the last bargain on Grand Lake is available.
