Small Business Owners React To Supreme Court Decision On ...

Da Kind Soups (credit: CBS)

Da Kind Soups (credit: CBS)

DENVER (CBS4)- On the final day of the Supreme Court?s session, the majority of justices upheld nearly all of President Obama?s health care reform plan. Now, Colorado?s small business owners are weighing in on the decision.

Lowell Whitney owns a manufacturing business. He?s not excited about the Supreme Court?s ruling on health care.

He said for him, it?s a deterrent to expanding his business and hiring more employees because he would be required to offer them health care.

?The cost for those employees goes up if the cost goes up it eats into our profits,? said Whitney.

The ruling includes the individual mandate requiring Americans to have health insurance or pay a tax penalty.

Conservative Chief Justice John Roberts joined the court?s liberal justices in the 5-to-4 ruling. They said that since Congress has the power to tax the mandate is constitutional.

At Da Kind Soups in Evergreen, co-owner Dustin has a different view of the health care plan.

?Here at the restaurant one evening I had a brain hemorrhage,? said Dustin. ?I had to spend two weeks in the hospital and some were intensive care.?

Dustin said the Supreme Court?s decision allows him access to coverage he may not have otherwise had because of his now pre-existing condition.

?I was ecstatic because I was worried that my health care was going to be taken away from me,? said Dustin.

Whitney agrees that everyone should be able to afford good health care but sees the plan as a much greater issue than just medical benefits.

?I see it as another loss for freedom in this country,? said Whitney.

In Thursday?s decision, the justices did find problems with the law?s expansion of Medicaid for the poor.

The court ruled the federal government cannot withhold full Medicaid allotments to states if they don?t take part in the expansion.

Portland's tightest housing markets: real estate roundup - Oregon Live

Today's don't-miss housing and development news from around the web:

Inventory: The supply of for-sale homes has dropped across the metro area, creating a market where demand outpaces supply. But some neighborhoods have an even shorter supply, while others are closer to a balanced market.

Front Porch ranked metro area zones by months of inventory -- homes on the market divided by monthly closed sales -- averaged over the last three months. The source data comes from the Regional Multiple Listing Service.

Six months typically represents a balanced market, while anything below represents? a market where demand outpaces supply. Here's how the neighborhoods stack up, along with the average sale price last month:

  1. North Washington County: 3.1 months, $361,400
  2. Northeast Portland: 3.2 months, $300,300
  3. Southeast Portland: 3.6 months, $236,300
  4. Beaverton/Aloha: 3.7 months, $228,400
  5. North Portland: 3.7 months, $231,900

The low supply has set off bidding wars in Portland and some suburban markets, and it's driving rising prices this summer in the metro area and across the country.

Tualatin apartments: Mill Creek Industrial Trust has secured financing for a 367-unit apartment complex in Tualatin. Subscription is required for that link, but The Oregonian's Sally Ho earlier reported some details of the project.

Lloyd District: A plan to widen Interstate 5 through the Rose Quarter is gaining momentum. Part of the plan is to loosen height restrictions and encourage more tower development in the area.?

On the importance of names. Or, "Are we at the hump or the hole?"

If you look at our recent GPS trajectory, you might think our navigator is, well, under the influence.

Chasing our tails, or chasing plankton?

But actually, our course is a planned path between 3 specific spots:

Da Base: Our home base for the past few days.
Da Hole: A location slightly south of Da Base, where the satellites showed chlorophyll levels looking a little low.
Da Hump: A spot slightly north of Da Base, where the satellites indicated chlorophyll levels were a little higher than the surrounding areas.

Da Hole, Da Hump, Da Midlands, Da Base. Not pictured: Da Promised Land.

So we started at Da Base, went down to Da Hole, back to Da Base, up to Da Hump, back to Da Base, down to Da Hole, back to Da Base, and now we?re heading back to Da Hump. You get the idea. If you?re confused, it?s okay. So are a lot of people on board! A common question the past few days has been, ?Wait, where are we again??

The idea is to go to a place (like Da Base), and then poke around for a while, taking different measurements. With the help of satellites, we can see where there might be something interesting ? like low chlorophyll levels at Da Hole or high chlorophyll levels at Da Hump ? and we can go there to check out what?s happening by deploying instruments like the CTD, different profiling floats, nets and traps.

Right now we?re steaming north?up to Da Hump again. From there, we?ll go farther north, where there?s something the scientists are tentatively calling ?the promised land? where there seems to be a big bloom of something (hopefully Ehux!). We won?t know until we get there though.

The hunt is on!

During this trip, I?ll be answering your questions about the science, this boat, and life onboard. Want to know how we search for plankton, why we?re here, or what the food is like? Just ask me! And if you?re wondering how I got here, check out the groups that made this adventure possible: Mind Open Media and COSEE NOW.

Cybercrime disclosures rare despite new SEC rule

(AP) ? Hackers broke into computers at hotel giant Wyndham Worldwide Corp. three times in two years and stole credit card information belonging to hundreds of thousands of customers. Wyndham didn't report the break-in in corporate filings even though the Securities and Exchange Commission wants companies to inform investors of cybercrimes.

Amid whispers of sensational online break-ins resulting in millions of dollars in losses, it remains remarkably difficult to identify corporate victims of cybercrimes. Companies are afraid that going public would damage their reputations, sink stock prices or spark lawsuits.

The chairman of the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee, Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D-W.Va., is adding a provision to cybersecurity legislation that would strengthen the reporting requirement. The SEC's guidance issued in October is not mandatory. It was intended to update for the digital age a requirement that companies report "material risks" that investors want to know.

Rockefeller's measure would direct the SEC's five commissioners to make clear when companies must disclose cyber breaches and spell out steps they are taking to protect their computer networks from electronic intrusions.

The SEC recently challenged Internet retailer Amazon's decision to omit from its 2011 annual report references to the online theft of customer data held by Zappos, an online shoe company owned by Amazon. Amazon eventually agreed to modify the statement slightly, according to correspondence between the company and the SEC. But the company still argued that the Zappos attack was not covered by the commission's cybersecurity guidance because it had no material impact on Amazon's business.

Cybercrime is rampant and not confined to the United States. The head of Britain's domestic spy agency said this week that cybersecurity ranks alongside terrorism as one of the United Kingdom's most pressing security challenges. In one recent case, an unspecified, London-listed company hit by a cyberattack incurred revenue losses of $1.2 billion, MI5 Director General Jonathan Evans said in rare public remarks in London. He did not identify the company or say which country was behind the attack. The U.S. has said China and Russia are the governments most frequently engaged in such hacking.

"What is at stake is not just our government secrets but also the safety and security of our infrastructure, the intellectual property that underpins our future prosperity, and the commercially sensitive information that is the lifeblood of our companies and corporations," Evans said.

Research by a cybersecurity expert shows dozens of Fortune 500 companies have lost a wide range of valuable information to cybercrimes, including intellectual property, bank account credentials, restricted data about patients of pharmaceutical companies and internal legal records.

Rodney Joffe of Neustar, an Internet infrastructure management company in Virginia, monitors networks used by online criminal groups and traces the origin of stolen information. He found evidence that 162 out 168 companies in the manufacturing, chemical and transportation sectors had been compromised. The names of the companies are being kept confidential for proprietary reasons, he said.

"No one is safe. Everyone is compromised," said Joffe, Neustar's senior technologist. "When people tell you, 'We are protected as a company,' they are really fooling themselves."

The SEC isn't tracking how many companies comply with its cybersecurity guidance. But publicly traded companies historically have resisted supplying information about cyber incidents because it highlights their weak spots, said Peter Toren, a former federal prosecutor with the Justice Department's computer crime division.

"It just doesn't look good," Toren said.

The breach of Wyndham's computers was described in a Federal Trade Commission lawsuit filed this week against the company and three subsidiaries for alleged security failures that led to the three data breaches between April 2008 and January 2010. The failures caused "the export of hundreds of thousands of consumers' payment card account information to an Internet domain address registered in Russia" and millions of dollars in fraudulent charges on consumers' accounts, the FTC said.

Wyndham didn't mention the break-ins in its 2011 annual report or prior securities filings, according to an Associated Press review of the records.

Wyndham's 2011 annual report said the "hospitality industry is under increasing attack by cyber-criminals in the U.S. and other jurisdictions in which we operate" and noted that it was involved in "claims relating to information security and data privacy." Wyndham spent $13 million more on security improvements and expects to spend as much as $100 million in 2012 to guard against "the increasingly aggressive global threat from cyber-criminals," according to the report.

Wyndham said in an emailed statement to The Associated Press that it "fully complied with SEC regulations in regards to the disclosure of material events." In the statement, Wyndham said the incidents were "previously reported," an apparent reference to notices to consumers that were published on the company's website. The company also said the FTC's claims were without merit.

Network infrastructure company Verisign reported in late October, just a few weeks after the SEC issued the guidance, that there had been several successful cyberattacks against its corporate networks in 2010. In the filing, Verisign said the company's management had not been informed of the attacks until September 2011.

LinkedIn, the online networking service, publicly announced on June 12 the online theft of 6.5 million user passwords. It said the announcement complies with its obligations to the SEC, but it has yet to file a report about the incident with the commission.

The new SEC guidance puts pressure on companies to decide whether to disclose a breach or keep it secret, said Jody Westby of Global Cyber Risk, a consulting firm. But she said the demand for information amounts to locking the door after the house has been robbed.

"The SEC would have done better to require all public companies to say whether they've taken actions to implement a security program," Westby said.

Hands-On: Nexus 7 Tablet Is a Media Hub that Amazon Must Fear

I've only been using it for about a day now, but the Nexus 7 is already the best 7-inch tablet I've ever tested. Without question, it out-classes the hugely popular Amazon Kindle Fire.

Gutters: Issue #312 - Mark Dos Santos

As someone who spent 7 years prior to my comics life working in a newsroom, today's page brings a smile to my face.

The internet has given everyone a voice and a platform to share that voice, which is a beautiful thing. But the opportunity to use that voice without proper diligence is rampant. I'm not saying that people aren't entitled to their opinions, but I am of the belief that opinions aren't necessarily journalism, and good journalism isn't without opinion. It's learning to understand the difference that makes for great reporters, columnists, and anchors. It takes talent, hard work and the ability to listen to what's happening around you.

Edward R. Murrow. Barbara Walters. Lloyd Robertson. These are journalists. They have reported on and witnessed moments that have changed the world. They have had their share of stories that didn't of course, but they know how to get to the humanity of a story and how to report it accurately, compassionately and with integrity.

Having a blog you update twice a month and using it to get free passes to Comicon is not the same thing.

Just sayin'...

Also, I can confirm with many independent sources that the artist of today's page is Mark Dos Santos:

Mark Dos Santos, a Kubert School Alumni, left New Jersey for sunny California to pursue a career in animation as a storyboard artist and character designer. He quickly became involved in comics producing independent titles. Mark has done work for Western Tales of Terror, Monkey vs Lemur, Zenescopes Grimm Fairy Tales, Fall of Cthulhu Godwar, Eureka : Dormant Gene for Boom Studios, IT! The Terror from Beyond Space for IDW and cover work for Hack/Slash from Devil's Due. He has also done sketch cards for Inkworks, Strictly Ink and Rittenhouse on such properties as Hellboy Animated, Family Guy, 2000AD, Ray Harryhousen, Marvel and DC COMICS.

Have a great New Comics Day, folks! See you back here Friday!

Weekly Security Update for 27th June 2012 | Iraq Business News

Weekly Security Update for 27th June 2012

Levels of violence fell in Iraq last week, but the overall number of attacks was still above average. At least 69 people were killed and 179 injured in nationwide incidents. A total of 48 bombings left 42 people dead and over 160 injured. A rise in small arms attacks left 27 people dead and 11 injured.

North
Mosul experienced a significant proportion of last week?s violence. The security forces remain by far the most common target, but ethnic and religious minorities are also a common victim of violence. Militants also attacked electricity pylons and oil infrastructure in Ta?mim and Diyala provinces. Vulnerable assets such as lengthy pipelines and unmanned towers far from urban populations appear to have been deliberately singled out and organisations managing such assets are advised to review their security measures accordingly.

?

Weekly Attacks in Iraq - the last 6 months

Centre
Most of last week?s violence in Iraq was concentrated along a belt of settlements in the central provinces, stretching from Hadithah in Anbar province, through Ramadi, Fallujah, Baghdad then on to Ba?qubah and Sa?adiyah in Diyala province. There was also a spike in activity in the holy city of Samarra (Salah ad-Din province) as Sunni radical groups appear to be stirring up sectarian tensions.

Three suicide bombings (including one which was foiled in Fallujah) left 18 people dead and 43 injured in the region last week. The use of suicide bombers indicates the enduring, and indeed rising activity of radical Islamists, including those affiliated with al-Qaeda. Given the latest rise in attacks in the region it would appear that the group is attempting to implement a co-ordinated and sustained campaign of violence aimed at discrediting the security forces and driving a wedge between the Sunni and Shi?ah communities. This in turn could lead to a worsening in conditions and put a major strain on the security forces.

At least six people were also kidnapped in what appears to have been a mini-spike in abductions in Anbar province last week. AKE will be issuing its next quarterly kidnap report in July. If you would like to purchase a copy in advance please contact intel@akegroup.com.

South
The south of Iraq was relatively quiet last week, although there was a handful of non-fatal but nonetheless concerning attacks in Maysan and Dhi Qar provinces. Militia groups appear to be increasing their attacks against rivals organisations and their supporters, with a number of bombs detonated outside the homes of politically-connected individuals over recent weeks. However, casualties from these attacks remain minimal, while most economic interests (including the energy and construction sectors) are not being affected.

John Drake is a senior risk consultant with AKE, a British risk mitigation company working in Iraq since 2003. You can access AKE?s intelligence website Global Intake here, and you can obtain a free trial of AKE?s Iraq intelligence reports here.

High court to deliver health care ruling Thursday

A view of the Supreme Court in Washington, Wednesday, June 27, 2012. Saving its biggest case for last, the Supreme Court is expected to announce its verdict Thursday on President Barack Obama's health care law. (AP Photo/Lynne Sladky)

(AP) ? They've known the outcome for three months. Now it's time for the nine Supreme Court justices to share it with the world.

Barring some incredibly strange twist, shortly after 10 o'clock in the morning Thursday, Chief Justice John Roberts is expected to reveal the high court's verdict on President Barack Obama's health care overhaul.

Between 400 and 500 people will crowd into the marble courtroom, the only witnesses to a historic moment that will not be broadcast live on television or radio. Some of those hoping for seats already were in line early Wednesday afternoon.

The court is not just passing judgment on a major expansion of the social safety net, designed to cover an additional 30 million Americans with health insurance. It is doing so on the president's signature domestic legislative achievement and in the heat of his closely fought campaign for re-election.

Four major issues await resolution, the most important of which is whether the law's centerpiece requirement that most people have health insurance or pay a penalty is constitutional. The justices also are weighing whether other parts or indeed the entire 2010 law should fall if they strike down the insurance requirement.

Apart from the insurance mandate, the court also is considering the validity of the health care law's significant expansion of Medicaid, the joint federal-state health care program for the poor.

One wrinkle could prevent the court from deciding the fate of the insurance requirement. A mid-19th century law prohibits challenges to taxes until they have been paid. The insurance requirement does not kick in until 2014 and people who pay the penalty won't do so until they file their 2014 income tax forms by April 15, 2015.

The court devoted more than six hours to arguments about these issues over three days in late March. The justices met March 30 to take a vote on the case and sort out who would take the lead in writing the opinions. In a case of this magnitude, the chief justice probably is writing the majority opinion, assuming he is in the majority.

The 26 states and the small business group challenging the law seemed to have the better of the courtroom arguments in March. Conservative justices peppered Solicitor General Donald Verrilli Jr. with hostile questions about both the insurance requirement and the Medicaid expansion.

But the lively arguments, the only time the justices discuss pending cases in public, are a relatively small part of a rather large record ? in this case, a mountain of more than 140 legal briefs.

Whatever the outcome, it seems certain to become part of the campaign between Obama and his Republican rival, Mitt Romney.

Obama could try to make the court itself, or more particularly its conservative majority, an issue if the insurance requirement or the whole law is struck down. For his part, Romney already has said he will try to take advantage of either outcome. If the law falls, Romney said it will show that "the first 3 1/2 years of this president's term will have been wasted on something that has not helped the American people." If the law is upheld, "we're going to have to have a president ? and I'm that one ? that's going to get rid of Obamacare. We're going to stop it on Day One," Romney said.

The case began almost as soon as Obama signed the law on March 23, 2010. Even before the day was out, Florida and 12 states filed the lawsuit that ended up at the Supreme Court. Another 13 states later joined in later.

The heart of the challenge was the claim that Congress could not force people to buy a product ? health insurance.

The administration advanced several arguments in defense of Congress' authority to require health insurance, including that it falls under the power to regulate interstate commerce.

The government also argued that the insurance requirement was necessary to make effective two other undoubtedly constitutional provisions: the requirements that insurers accept people regardless of existing health problems and limit what they charge older, sicker people.

The administration also said that even if the court rejected the first two arguments, the insurance requirement and penalty are constitutional as an exercise of Congress' power to enact taxes. The penalty assessed for not buying insurance functions like a tax, the government said.

Dr. Ewa Kleczyk on Business, the Pharmaceutical Industry and ...

InTech, in its mission to not only put the highlights on its open access, scientific books but on its perspective authors as well, talked to Dr. Ewa Kleczyk, author of the chapters ?Risk Management in the Development of New Products in the Pharmaceutical Industry? (from the book ?Risk Management Trends?, Giancarlo Nota, 2011), ?The Determinants of Corporate Debt Maturity Structure? (from the book ?Business Dynamics in the 21st Century?, Chee-Heong Quah, and Ong Lin Dar, 2012) and co-author with Darrell J. Bosch of ?Households? Preferences for Plumbing Materials? (from the book ?Corrosion Resistance?, Hong Shih, 2012).

Risk Management Trends

Risk Management Trends

Dr. Kleczyk obtained her PhD in Economics from Virginia Tech in 2008 and is currently employed as the?Senior Director, Custom Analytics at ImpactRx (formerly TargetRx), firm that provides pharmaceutical and biotech companies with information regarding the criteria in product choice and adoption for their brands. Among other, Dr. Kleczyk has been awarded for her diligent work by Cambridge Who?s Who, TargetRx Excellence Award, the American Business Women?s Association and the National Association of Professional Women as Dr. Kleczyk has been known and praised for her engagement in promoting women in science.

We talked to Dr. Kleczyk about her career, her paper titled ?Risk Management in the Development of New Products in the Pharmaceutical Industry?, the controversial pharmaceutical research field in general and open access.

InTech: For how long have you been researching risk management in the pharmaceutical industry?

I have worked in the Pharmaceutical Consulting Industry for the past 6 years that includes working in the area of new product forecasting and risk management.

InTech: In your chapter ?Risk Management in the Development of New Products in the Pharmaceutical Industry? you state that deciding which new products to develop is a major challenge for many pharmaceutical companies with an excess of opportunities, but limited resources. Is it possible that these limited resources prevent some excellent new medicines to see the light of day and cure or relieve the symptoms of a certain population sub-group suffering from rare illnesses?

I think the current ways of selecting products has become subjective and cost driven, impacting negatively the types of products that are taken to the market. Some products should be brought to the market, but due to the scares resources and a number of potentially more profitable drugs in the pipeline, they might not be available for patient use.

For example, recently, Big Pharma has decided to decrease the research finding for neuroscience drugs, as they have high financial and time research costs. This unprecedented decision might result in inadequate treatments of the growing elderly population for diseases such as depression, sleep disorders, Alzheimer, and Parkinson.

Pharmaceutical Industry

?I think the current ways of selecting products has become subjective and cost driven, impacting negatively the types of products that are taken to the market.? ? Ewa Kleczyk

InTech: As you wrote, until the late 1980s, cash flows, expected returns, and net present value of income were the key variables in the decision-making process of the new drug development and investment. So according to your research, how have things changed?

The Consumer Theory and its research techniques have become an important part of the new product potential evaluation process. Understanding the product perceptions of potential consumer groups, their adoption speed and rate can help more precisely investigate the product uptake, as well as inform the investment decisions into the new drugs. However, this research should not be done in a vacuum, as this method only covers the demand aspect of the new product potential research. Joining this research with the Net Income Analysis would ensure looking at the production costs and risks, as well as the future potential sales of the product when available for use.

InTech: How would you like for your research to be perceived by risk assessment managers?

I would like my chapter to be viewed as helpful to the risk assessment managers in making new product decisions. Knowing the available evaluation methods of new product potential and knowing when to use each of the different technique should help the management in making their investment and research decisions.

?InTech: While researching this specific field, what information you came across which struck you the most?

The information that struck me the most while doing my research for this chapter was the small number of chemical molecules that become available for patient use. Only 1% researched molecules is brought to market. This finding underlines the importance of understanding the key issues of new product risk management to properly identify the chemical molecules for investment.

InTech: You are a successful researcher publishing articles in journals, books and lecturing at conferences. You are also socially active by encouraging women to pursue a career in fields such as mathematics, traditionally ruled by men. What is your perception of women in science today?

Women play a significant role in all areas in today?s world, including business, politics, academics, and sciences. It is very encouraging for many young women to know that they can be whoever they would like to be in their professional lives, as long as they work hard and are committed to their goals.

However, I think, we, the professional women, should continue mentoring and encouraging girls and young women to study mathematics, sciences, and economics, as the work is not done yet. In today?s world being a super model, reality star, and actress seems more interesting and appealing to many young women, due to greater public exposure and high financial rewards.

Promoting women in science

Promoting women in science

I think creating sponsorship or mentorship programs at educational institutions could help to promote women in sciences and business. In addition, the financial support many women receive to pursue education in these areas should continue to be distributed. The more support women get, the more likely they to follow their dreams, and become part of the scientific, political, and business cultures.

InTech: You published under the Open Access model. What is your personal opinion on unlocking scientific content to a wider audience then ever before, removing the barriers previously held by traditional scientific publishers?

Open Access Journals have revolutionized sharing of scientific information, and promoted innovation and timely dissemination of research results. Prior to the Open Access Journals, the publishing process was very lengthy, and able to reach only a limited number of readers. Today, within a couple of months (sometimes even a shorter time frame) information can be shared with a wide audience of readers. The timely research dissemination helps for quicker socialization of new concepts, as well as further improvements of researched topics.

InTech: Do you think Open Access is beneficial to all scientists and researchers?

I truly believe that the Open Access Journals are beneficial to all scientists and researchers. As mentioned above, the shorter time frame of research dissemination, and ability for sharing work with a greater audience, inspires innovation and collaboration within the scientific community. I would want to caution the journals though from publishing any documents they receive as a submission. Some of the published work is not to up to the research standards, impacting the credibility of these new venues. Greater oversight should be implemented to limit potentially low quality of work from publishing.

InTech: In terms of a more fertile, subsidised and collaborative scientific environment, how do you compare Northern America to Europe?

In the recent 30 years, the US has become the innovation centre for technology and sciences. Researchers from all over the world arrive to the US to participate in research opportunities provided by the US government as well as private companies. I believe this level of involvement is not seen in the continental Europe, although in order to compete with the US innovation, the European Union has increased research funding for European researchers to retain current and attract new talent.

InTech: What are your impressions on InTech as your Open Access publisher?

I think InTech is a respectable venue for all authors to publish their work in, and receive world-wide exposure to their research. I was very happy to see the number of scientists from different countries contacting me about my work, and sharing their perspectives on the risk management subject.

InTech: Are you satisfied with the editor?s work, the management of the publishing process and the InTech?s publishing team?

I had a wonderful experience working with the InTech Team. The attention to detail and professionalism has made the process quite simple and enjoyable. Overall, I am very delighted by the process of publishing with InTech, and have already submitted another chapter for review.

InTech: Tell us something about your future plans.

In 10 years from now, I would like to lead a market research / consulting company. Even with increased technology, informative data analysis is a necessity to making the optimal decisions for any business. With declining budgets, making the right decision has become even more important, consequently having a highly qualified team, working to help clients finding the right solutions for their business needs, will help to save money, and increase profitability of the company.

What is secretly eating away at your 401k

The goal of investing in a 401k is to make money for your retirement, however, in a?volatile?market, losses taken can drastically impact your?nest egg. In addition to the risk of investments, if you?re using mutual funds in your 401k you could be paying?exorbitant?fees even when you lose money. CNN explains danger of hidden fees in mutual funds:

According to a recent?AARP survey, 71% of people with 401(k)s didn?t even know they were paying fees for their retirement accounts.

So how much do these fees really cost you?

The answer may shock you.?Fees can, on average, reduce your 401(k) balance by up to 30%, regardless of whether you have $1 or $1 million in your retirement account.

What are these fees, then, that are taking such a big bite out of your retirement account? There are four kinds: administrative fees, marketing fees (sometimes called 12-b1 fees), investment management fees and trading costs.

The first three types of fees are shown, as an aggregate total, in each mutual fund?s expense ratio, and are generally reported in your 401(k)?s ?summary documents? as a percentage of assets.

But the investment industry disagrees, arguing that such costs are justified because mutual fund expenses are regulated by the competition of the free market, and what consumers are paying is simply the cost of doing business.

The problem with this argument is that it?s not true.

Index funds, for example, have often outperformed actively managed mutual funds while charging a small fraction of the fees. But investing more in index funds will not come close to fixing the broken, expensive 401(k) system.

Emergency Survival Document Binder ? Do It And How

This is just part of a lengthy, informative, instructional plan for any family? Please click HERE for complete article!

Important Documents

It is unlikely that any documents you choose to include in your kit will keep you alive.? However, having them all organized and together can make your life so much easier now and in the event of an emergency.? Making insurance claims, searching for missing loved ones (heaven forbid), staying in touch with family and friends, traveling around the country and accessing your financial accounts will all be much easier if you have some essential documents at your fingertips.? In addition, having a binder like what I?m about to suggest to you can also make your day to day life easier and more efficient.

I?m simply going to walk you page by page through my ?emergency documents binder.?? I keep this near our kit, but not in it as I access and use it often.? It goes wherever I go so that I can have access to these important documents anytime, anywhere.

Family Evacuation Plan:

The front cover:

Nathan (my husband) and I each have our own prioritized list of what our responsibilities will be when / if we need to evacuate.? If we are given 10-30 minutes notice, we start in at the top or the first list and try to get through as much as we can.? The stuff at the bottom of the list isn?t as essential as the stuff at the top.? If given just a few minutes to evacuate (and doing so on foot), we use the second lists instead.? You can read more about our family evacuation plan here. (although I need to edit it a bit online?the printed one is more accurate!)

Important Phone Numbers:

The first page:

Download it:

This front side of this page has 6 boxes on it:

  • A box with our address and phone numbers
  • A box with ?essential? info for every member of our family (name, DOB, allergies)
  • A box that says: ?If you are unsure who to call and it is an emergency, dial 911!
  • A box with phone numbers to all our insurance companies along with the insurance policy numbers (car, life, health etc)
  • A box with other important emergency numbers (poison control, 24 hr nurse line, gas company, plummer, etc)
  • A box with our doctor?s phone numbers.

I have a 2nd copy of this printed and posted inside our pantry for babysitters and even my own use.? I don?t want to have to take the time to look up poison control or even my children?s doctors #s each time I need them.? And if I need the gas shut off, I want it done quick.? Having this posted makes my life simpler.

The back side of this page has 5 boxes on it:

Socials & Insurance IDs

In business card sheet protector:

They are easy to access.? I always know where they are and will have them in the event of an emergency.? Enough said.

Family Pictures

In photo sheet protector

If you were to lose a child (during a natural disaster or otherwise) and then find him / her, you may have to prove that he /she belongs to you.? This would be especially true if the child was injured / incoherent and unable to recognize you for any reason.? Having a older and more recent family photo is one very quick way to prove that this child does and has belonged to you for some time.? We will be getting family pictures taken on Saturday, so I will be adding a more recent picture then.? The picture you see is the only one I currently have that includes Bethany, but she is just a few weeks old.

Child ID Kits

With pertinent documents behind it.

Download it:

I created this Child ID Kit after searching for a free one online and not finding one I liked.? Print it out on cardstock.? Write it all the info you can about your child off to the right.? Take their fingerprints and be sure to include the date at the top.? Update this page every 6 months.? These pages are the main reason I keep this folder with me at all times.? If I were to every lose my child, I?d want the police to have all their information as quickly as possible.? I?ve heard horror stories of mothers who can?t remember their children?s birth dates, eye color etc. b/c they are so distraught with worry.? I don?t want that to happen to me.

A tip for the fingerprints: DO NOT ?roll? your finger when pressing it on the paper.? This can cause the ridges to distort.? And don?t use too much ink: practice on a piece of paper first!

Behind each of my Child ID kits (in the same sheet protector), I keep that child?s birth certificate & shot record.? My kids have no allergies or health concerns, but if they did, I would keep details on that info in this sleeve as well.
