How Will Hurricane Sandy Affect Stocks and the U.S. Economy ...

Hurricane Sandy has shut down the New York Stock Exchange. The last time a natural catastrophe forced Wall Street to go into hibernation was Hurricane Gloria in 1985.

Even though trading at the NYSE?has halted, investors never stop looking for the next opportunity. What sectors will be most affected by this or any other hurricane and are there any profit opportunities?

Insurance Sector

It?s yet to be seen what kind of damage Sandy will cause. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (noaa.gov), Katrina was the most expensive hurricane with damages of $145 billion.

Someone has to pay for that damage and insurance companies (that?s what we have insurance for) will end up paying a fair share of the repairs.

Property and Casualty Insurance companies collected about $471 billion worth of premium in 2010. According to a report by the Congressional Research Service, done right after hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans.?The net profit earned on the $471 billion worth of premium should be about $40 billion.

The same report states that: ?Most insurance experts would agree that the $100 billion-plus catastrophic event remains a challenge for the U.S. property and casualty insurance industry.?

A common sense approach to investing suggests to stay away from the insurance sector and ETFs like the SPDR S&P Insurance ETF. Of course, the ultimate cost of any disaster will be passed on to policyholders via increased insurance premiums.

Energy Sector

The New Jersey coast is home to more than six large refineries and has a refining capacity of 1.2 million barrels per day. As of Monday, two thirds of the refineries were shut down.

New Jersey refineries account for about 7% of total refining capacity in the U.S.?In comparison, the gulf coast accounts for 45% of U.S. refining capacity.

The decreased energy demand of the densely populated East Coast caused by hurricane Sandy could be about the same or more than?the loss of refining capacity. This means rising oil and gasoline prices nationwide are far from guaranteed.

In fact, immediately following hurricane Katrina, oil prices dropped a stunning 21%. Hurricanes are not an automatic buy signal for ETFs like the Energy Select Sector SPDR (XLE), S&P Oil & Gas Exploration & Production SPDR (XOP) and others.

Home Construction Sector

Home improvement stores like Home Depot and Lowe?s should attract a big chunk of the disaster prevention and disaster repair dollars spent. The iShares Dow Jones US Home Construction ETF (ITB) has an 8.7% exposure to Home Depot and Lowe?s.

Retail Sector

Will money spent at Home Depot and Lowe?s cannibalize the holiday spending budget? Retailers like Macy?s, Kohls, Gap, Nordstrom, Tiffany, Amazon, Best Buy ? all part of the S&P Retail SPDR ETF (XRT) ? could suffer from Sandy.

Hurricanes and the Stock Market

What?s the effect of hurricanes on stocks? The chart below shows all major U.S. hurricanes (since the year 2000) in correlation to the S&P 500 Index.

Allison in June 2000 came amidst the tech bubble deflation. Charly, Frances, Ivan, Katrina, Rita, and Wilma didn?t make a dent in the 2002 ? 2007 market rally.

Gustav and Ike happened right before the financial sector unraveled in 2008 and Irene landed on shore at a time when we expected a major market bottom.

The August ? October timeframe happens to be a tumultuous one for nature and stocks and recent hurricanes coincided with stock market inflection points.

This could be the case again with Sandy. Last week?s Profit Radar Report pointed out that the S&P 500, Dow Jones Industrials, MidCap 400 Index, and Russell 2000 are all above key technical support.

Like a stretched rubber band they should snap back, but if the don?t they?ll break. As such, the next opportunity will likely be triggered by technical developments not hurricane Sandy. The?Profit Radar Report?will provide continuous updates and trigger levels for the ?stretched rubber band? condition.

What Does it Take for a Business to Succeed Today? - Kronik Media

Starting a business can be very challenging. In addition to a great product and unique selling proposition, every business needs an effective online marketing strategy in order to succeed.

Whether you are looking to start a new business or want to grow your existing business, an effective online strategy is the key to the long term viability and success of your business. How we do business has changed significantly in recent years. Although the goals and objectives remain largely unchanged, the methods required to get there have changed.

What then does it take to succeed online today? Working with several businesses and advising them on how to build a brand online has given me an insight into the strategies that work and those that don?t.

Below are 5 important strategies with important tips that can help your business to succeed.

1. A Great Website

There is much more to a great website than a visually appealing design. Good design is important. But a great website goes far beyond that. Several factors need to be considered in order for your website to achieve the expected results and help your business grow. There are several characteristics of a professional website. Here are some elements that make a website great.

Business Success - Good Web Design

Website Tips:

  • Make sure the design of your website reflects your brand
  • Offer quality content
  • Include a variety of content, not just information about your business and its products
  • Use effective calls to action
  • Offer interactive features on your website
  • Engage with visitors on your website
  • Good navigation

2. Active Blog

Experts argue that a business should post quality content to their website almost on a daily basis in order to build a brand and grow the business. There is no better way of doing this than a blog.

Marketers have been arguing about the importance of blogging for quite some time. Studies clearly show the benefits of blogging for a business. However, in spite of this many businesses are not taking full advantage of blogging.

How Can Business Succeed - Add Blog

Whether you run a one person business or an established organisation, it is very difficult to succeed without an active blogging strategy.

How Does Blogging Help?

An active blogging strategy offers several benefits for your business. These include:

  • Higher ranking on Google for multiple search terms relevant to your business
  • High traffic from search engines as well as direct referral traffic
  • More links to your website and resulting referral traffic
  • Trust and credibility in your business
  • Improved customer confidence
  • Improved brand visibility

How Can Business Succeed - Blogging Benefits

Blogging Tips to Help Your Business Succeed:

Here are some business blogging tips to help you get the most out of your blog:

  • Use a self-hosted WordPress blog on your website instead of a free blog platform
  • Post frequently (At least 3 times per week, more if possible)
  • Syndicate blog content on several external sources
  • Don?t be overly promotional. Instead write about general topics relevant to your business

3. Effective Social Media Strategy

Social media marketing has become essential to the success of any business today. Whether you sell products online or use your online presence to build and promote your brand, an effective social media strategy is the key to the long term success of your business.

The only drawback of social media is that it can take up to a year before the return on investment is noticeable. As a result, many small businesses find it difficult to allocate sufficient resources towards building their social presence.

Social signals are also playing an increasingly important role in search engine results.

Business Success - Use Social Media

How Does Social Media Help?

  • Creates brand recognition
  • Attract a large consumer base
  • Form connections and build relationships online
  • Off customer service to existing customers
  • Target new potential customers
  • Improves credibility
  • Builds authority and influence

Social Media Tips

Here are some social media marketing tips to help you get started:

  • Maintain brand presence on several social sites, not just Facebook and Twitter
  • Don?t forget relatively new sites like Google Plus and Pinterest
  • Post content from several sources, not just from your website
  • Post at least 5 times a week
  • Customise your strategy for each network
  • Use consistent personalised branding on all social networks
  • Engage actively with users

4. Focus on Lead Generation

Simply using the above channels including your website, blog and social media is not enough. Ultimately, the success of your business will depend on your ability to leverage the above channels to generate leads? and sales for your business.

Leads are not only generated via your website but also on your blog, social media profiles and via any content you create as part of your content marketing efforts. For best results, a business needs to apply lead generating tactics across the board i.e. on your website, blog as well as on social media.

How Does it Helps?

  • Generate leads for your business
  • Increases your revenue
  • Improves conversion rates
  • Avoids missed opportunities
  • Direct impact on business growth

Here are some tips to help you to get started:

Lead Generation on your website and blog:

  • Use effective calls to action
  • Use well designed lead capture forms
  • Display well design buttons
  • Place your calls to action in a prominent position above the fold
  • Offer incentives e.g. free eBook for signing-up to your newsletter, 10% off for buying today, free 1 month support, etc.
  • Use Google Website Optimizer to run split tests to see what works best

Lead Generation Tips for Social Media

  • Display email sign-up form on your Facebook page
  • Offer incentives to join your network
  • Use calls to action in your posts
  • Include a link to a dedicated landing page (with lead capture form) on your profile instead of linking to? your homepage.
  • Post messages to generate an interest in your services and motivate customers to avail of your services.

5. Content Marketing Plan

Content marketing is an effective inbound marketing technique that involves creating and distributing valuable content to a target audience ? with the objective of converting them into customers. Good content marketing plan allows you to get the most out of your content whilst generating leads for your business.

It is an intelligent form of marketing where instead of pitching your sales messages to the masses; you attract customers by producing quality information that is of interest to them. This results in qualified leads from prospects who have read your content and are already interested in the products or services you are trying to sell.

Blogging and social media are perfect examples of effective content marketing techniques. However, there are several other content marketing methods that you can take advantage of.

How Content Marketing Helps?

  • Create brand awareness
  • Obtain backlinks
  • Generate direct referral traffic
  • Get your business noticed
  • Build your audience

Content Marketing Techniques

Here are some other content marketing methods you can take advantage of in addition to blogging and social media:

  • EBooks
  • Reports and White papers
  • Promoting content via content curation services like Paper.li
  • Creating documents on document sharing sites like Slideshare or Docstoc
  • Creating and sharing images and infographics on image sharing sites like Flickr
  • Branded videos promoted on video sharing sites like You Tube and Vimeo

Conclusion:

Although the online marketplace has become increasingly crowded, a good business idea backed by a powerful marketing strategy can easily help your business succeed. Focusing on all of the above areas is essential if you want your business to be successful today.

Earnings Preview: GM reports 3Q earnings Wednesday

DETROIT (AP) ? General Motors Co. reports third-quarter results on Wednesday. Earnings are expected to fall short of last year's performance due to mounting losses in Europe and slowing profits in North America.

North America is still expected to do well. But in Europe, the company has too many factories cranking out cars in the slumping region. GM is expected to post big losses in Europe.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR: Wall Street expects GM's European loss to widen to $500 million before taxes. North America, GM's most profitable region, is expected to make about $1.5 billion pretax, down 32 percent from a year earlier.

Analysts are expecting comments about GM's restructuring efforts for its Opel and Vauxhall brands in Europe. European passenger car sales were down 7.6 percent for the first nine months of the year.

"Either on or just after 3Q earnings, we expect GM to provide an update on its labor strategy and strategic partnerships, expressing continued commitment to Opel," Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas wrote in a note to investors.

Last week, GM revealed part of its joint venture strategy with France's PSA Peugeot Citroen. The companies said they'll jointly make a small van for Opel and Vauxhall and a compact crossover vehicle for Peugeot. They'll also develop a new, low-emissions small car and work together on mid-size cars and small vans. The two companies inked an alliance earlier this year that included GM taking a 7 percent stake in Peugeot.

GM's results in North America will take a hit from marketing and engineering costs delayed from the second quarter. The results will also reflect costs associated with converting factories to build new Chevrolet and GMC pickup trucks, which come out early next year, Jonas wrote.

Also, GM's U.S. sales through September grew only 3.4 percent, lagging the overall market's growth of 14.5 percent.

Still some analysts see GM as a promising stock buy. Jonas has a 12-month price target of $44 per share, almost 90 percent higher than Friday's closing price of $23.28. Stock markets were not open Monday due to Hurricane Sandy. Many investors and sell-side analysts see untapped potential for GM and its $27 billion cash stockpile that has been overlooked by the market, Jonas wrote.

He also wrote that due to tax write-offs from years of losses, GM probably won't pay taxes to the U.S. government until 2018.

WHY IT MATTERS: GM, although smaller than before its trip through bankruptcy court, still employs 210,000 people worldwide including 79,000 in the U.S. Its car sales are a major component of the U.S. economy.

GM's results also are being watched closely by the U.S. government, which still holds 500 million GM shares that it got as part of the company's 2009 bailout. The government needs $26.4 billion to recoup its full investment in GM, meaning GM's stock would have to sell for roughly $53 per share. Strong earnings could drive up the share price.

EXPECTATIONS: Analysts expect net income of just over $1 billion, or 64 cents per share, far short of the $1.7 billion, or $1.03 per share, the company made in the same quarter of 2011. Excluding special items, analysts polled by FactSet expect 60 cents per share. Revenue is expected to total $35.96 billion, down 2 percent from a year earlier.

East Coast Grinds To Halt As Superstorm Bears Down

Sand blows on the beach ahead of Hurricane Sandy on Sunday in Atlantic City, N.J.

Hurricane Sandy bore down on the Eastern Seaboard's largest cities Monday, forcing the shutdown of mass transit, schools and financial markets, sending coastal residents fleeing, and threatening a dangerous mix of high winds, soaking rain and a surging wall of water up to 11 feet tall.

Sandy strengthened before dawn and stayed on a predicted path toward Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia and New York ? putting it on a collision course with two other weather systems that would create a superstorm with the potential for havoc over 800 miles from the East Coast to the Great Lakes. About 2 to 3 feet of snow were even forecast for mountainous parts of West Virginia.

The tempest could endanger up to 50 million people for days.

Many workers planned to stay home Monday as subways, buses and trains shut down across the region under the threat of flooding that could inundate tracks and tunnels. Airports also closed, and authorities warned that the time for evacuation was running out or already past. Utilities brought in extra crews, anticipating widespread power failures.

The center of the storm was positioned to come ashore Monday night in New Jersey, meaning the worst of the surge could be in the northern part of that state and in New York City and on Long Island. Higher tides brought by a full moon compounded the threat to the metropolitan area of about 20 million people.

"This is the worst-case scenario," said Louis Uccellini, environmental prediction chief for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

As rain from the leading edges began to fall over the Northeast on Sunday, hundreds of thousands of people from Maryland to Connecticut were ordered to leave low-lying coastal areas, including 375,000 in lower Manhattan and other parts of New York City, 50,000 in Delaware and 30,000 in Atlantic City, N.J., where the city's 12 casinos shut down for only the fourth time ever.

"I think this one's going to do us in," said Mark Palazzolo, who boarded up his bait-and-tackle shop in Point Pleasant Beach, N.J., with the same wood he used in past storms, crossing out the names of Hurricanes Isaac and Irene and spray-painting "Sandy" next to them. "I got a call from a friend of mine from Florida last night who said, 'Mark, get out! If it's not the storm, it'll be the aftermath. People are going to be fighting in the streets over gasoline and food.' "

President Obama declared emergencies in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, authorizing federal relief work to begin well ahead of time. He promised the government would "respond big and respond fast" after the storm hits.

"My message to the governors as well as to the mayors is anything they need, we will be there, and we will cut through red tape," Obama said. "We are not going to get bogged down with a lot of rules."

Authorities warned that New York could get hit with a surge of seawater that could swamp parts of lower Manhattan, flood subway tunnels and cripple the network of electrical and communications lines that are vital to the nation's financial center.

Major U.S. financial markets, including the New York Stock Exchange, Nasdaq and CME Group in Chicago, planned a rare shutdown Monday. The NYSE closed on Sept. 27, 1985, for Hurricane Gloria. The United Nations also shut down and canceled all meetings at its New York headquarters.

New York called off school Monday for the city's 1.1 million students and announced it would suspend all train, bus and subway service Sunday night. More than 5 million riders a day depend on the transit system.

"If you don't evacuate, you are not only endangering your life, you are also endangering the lives of the first responders who are going in to rescue you," Mayor Michael Bloomberg warned. "This is a serious and dangerous storm."

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie was typically blunt: "Don't be stupid. Get out."

Wary of being seen as putting their political pursuits ahead of public safety, Obama and Republican nominee Mitt Romney reshuffled campaign plans as the storm approached.

In Virginia, one of the most competitive states, election officials eased absentee voting requirements for those affected by the storm. Early voting was canceled Monday in Maryland and the District of Columbia.

Sandy, a Category 1 hurricane with sustained winds of 85 mph early Monday, was blamed for 65 deaths in the Caribbean before it began traveling northward, parallel to the Eastern Seaboard. As of 5 a.m. Monday, it was centered about 385 miles south-southeast of New York City, moving to the north at 15 mph, with hurricane-force winds extending an unusual 175 miles from its center.

Gale-force winds blew overnight over coastal North Carolina, southeastern Virginia, the Delmarva Peninsula and coastal New Jersey.

Sandy was expected to hook inland Monday, colliding with a wintry storm moving in from the west and cold air streaming down from the Arctic, and then cut across into Pennsylvania and travel up through New York state.

Forecasters said the combination could bring close to a foot of rain in places, a potentially lethal storm surge of 4 to 11 feet across much of the region, and punishing winds that could cause widespread power outages that last for days. The storm could also dump up to 2 feet of snow in Kentucky, North Carolina and West Virginia.

Airlines canceled nearly 7,500 flights and Amtrak began suspending train service across the Northeast. New York, Philadelphia, Washington and Baltimore moved to shut down their subways, buses and trains. Those cities shut down their schools, as did Boston. Non-essential government offices closed in the nation's capital.

Pennsylvania's largest utilities brought in hundreds of line and tree-trimming crews in anticipation of several days of power failures or intentional shutdowns in areas with heavy flooding.

In New Jersey, where utilities were widely criticized last year for slow responses after the remnants of storms Irene and Lee, authorities promised a better performance. Bob Hanna, president of the state's Board of Public Utilities, noted that this storm has the potential to threaten even large transmission lines.

Nearly 100 miles off the coast of Cape Hatteras, N.C., a replica of the tall ship made famous in the film Mutiny on the Bounty was taking on water and without propulsion with 17 people aboard, the Coast Guard said. Officials were monitoring the situation early Monday.

On Sunday evening in Rehoboth, Del., only a few cars rolled along Route 1, an artery that is often bumper-to-bumper in summer.

"We were told to get the heck out. I was going to stay, but it's better to be safe than sorry," said Hugh Phillips, who was one of the first in line when a Red Cross shelter opened Sunday afternoon in neighboring Lewes.

Despite the dire warnings, some refused to budge.

Jonas Clark of Manchester Township, N.J. ? right in Sandy's projected path ? stood outside a convenience store, calmly sipping a coffee and wondering why people were working themselves "into a tizzy."

"I've seen a lot of major storms in my time, and there's nothing you can do but take reasonable precautions and ride out things the best you can," said Clark, 73.

The storm threatened to drench areas still recovering from last year's deluges.

In Pompton Lakes, N.J., where record flooding inundated homes a year ago, some residents were already putting belongings out near the curb in advance of the storm.

"They're figuring, divide and conquer," said resident Kevin Gogots. "They'll take the stuff they want to save and put the rest out. Of course, if the street floods again, we'll just have things floating around."

Next Hitman game won't be from IO Interactive | Video Game Blog ...

Danish developer IO Interactive has established itself as the lead developer of the Hitman series ever since the first game debuted way back in 2000. They also worked on other projects such as Freedom Fighters, Kane and Lynch and Mini Ninjas, but making Hitman has always been what they were known for and they?re really good at it. Now though it seems that the franchise?s next installment might be in the hands of another studio, at least according to Karsten Lund, a longtime IO employee who is currently working at Square Enix Montreal.

In the middle of a Gamasutra piece written by him you find this:

?IO Interactive have been doing a very good job of putting the player front and center and have given us some of the most memorable moments in gaming; emergent stories of how players completed missions shared at the water cooler, this to me is the core DNA of a Hitman game. I know how hard that is to create; I was at Io for the last 11 years. Our challenge is obviously to retain that DNA, while establishing ownership in our team and of our game.?

He justifies this unexpected change with the fact that ?working with a completely new team around an established IP really gives us a unique perspective on what a Hitman game can be. We can revisit some of the ?holy cows? from other Hitman games, and ask ourselves why and what in a new way, while creating a new and unique Hitman experience.?

Which studio will be taking on the role of Hitman developer is unknown at this point. Personally I hope it?s Eidos Montreal.

Minister casts doubt on Conservative tax pledge

LONDON (Reuters) - A flagship tax policy promised by Prime Minister David Cameron's Conservative party remained on track to be delivered, an official said on Saturday, after a senior minister cast doubt on it.

Cabinet Minister Ken Clarke expressed doubts over the chances of the government implementing the tax plans, which would benefit married couples, before the next national elections due in 2015.

The suggestion in a newspaper interview was another potential embarrassment for the gaffe-prone administration. It added to an image of dither and disorganisation in the government that has gathered pace following a series of policy u-turns following an unpopular budget in March.

"We never committed ourselves to married couples' tax by the end of the parliament," Clarke told the Daily Telegraph in the interview.

"I'm married, I'm not counting on it. I don't remember anyone promising that kind of thing," he said.

A spokesman for Clarke later said the minister had merely expressed an opinion.

"It was a comment, not a statement of policy," said the spokesman. "Any tax changes are a matter for the Chancellor. He accepts the changes will happen."

The Conservatives promised the tax changes before coming to power in 2010 as part of pro-family policies aimed at encouraging couples to stay together.

Cameron has vowed to implement the moves, although they are opposed by his junior Lib Dem coalition partners.

Clarke's comments come just days after data showed the economy had returned to growth, giving Cameron hope he could calm criticism after months of policy reverses and last week's drawn-out resignation of a minister who swore at a policeman.

Clarke, 72, a former finance minister on the left of the party, also dampened expectations that a 1 percent jump in gross domestic product in the third quarter, after three quarters of decline, spelled the end of Britain's economic woes.

"It would be absolute folly to turn around and say it will all be fine by Christmas. Anybody who says we are absolutely certain we are bouncing back to strong growth is being very optimistic," he said.

'RECKLESS' THREATS

He risked adding to Cameron's political difficulties by warning of the dangers of Conservative legislators talking up the prospects of Britain leaving the European Union.

Cameron, under pressure from an increasingly influential "eurosceptic" faction within his party, wants to renegotiate Britain's relationship with the EU and hold a referendum on the outcome, although he is opposed to a straight "in/out" vote.

"To start threatening, throwing into the air our relationship with the outside world, with the global economy, would I think be very reckless," Clarke said.

"I frequently say that to several of my colleagues - there seems little point in opening up the debate at the moment about our membership of the European Union," he added, striking a pro-European tone rarely heard these days from senior Conservatives.

"The idea that somehow the present problems are caused by Britain's membership of the European Union is a theory that I can't quite follow."

Cameron demoted Clarke from justice minister in a reshuffle last month, but kept him in the Cabinet as a non-departmental minister with a roving brief across government.
